Presentation transcript:

The ritual masking in the Bulgarian folk culture dates back to pagan times when the warrior has put on the skin of the animal totem. In ancient times, the man believed that the world of the alive and their ancestors are one in its entirety. The mask was a means to "move beyond" in order to contribute to his own prosperity and well-being.

Winter masquerade customs and festivities are held during the so called "impure days" - from Christmas (25th, Dec) to St. John's Day(7th, Jan). According to tradition, only bachelors participate in them. According to tradition, only bachelors participate in them. T he main idea in the ritual, performed by costumed men, who walk around and dance, is to scare away the evil spirits as well as to provide a good harvest, health, fertility, and happiness. Go Away Evil Spirits, the Kukeri say

The performance of the masked men is a mystical union of rhythm, sound, and colour. Wearing unique costumes and magnificent, fabulous hand- made masks, they move around in their characteristic stride, filling the air with the sounds of hundreds of copper and bronze bells, prayers and wishes. They perform the ancient rite of chasing away evil and celebrating the triumph of reborn life with the beginning of spring and the associated hopes of man for rich harvest and better life !
