Famous people from Poland

Frederick Chopin Roman Polanski Nicolaus Copernicus Vislava Shimborska Roman Polanski Nicolaus Copernicus Casimir III the Great Pope John Paul II Henryk Sienkiewicz

Frederick Chopin Chopin was the second child and only son. The parish baptismal record, discovered in 1892, gives his birthday as 22 February 1810. The great majority of Chopin's compositions were written for the piano as solo instrument. He is a genius of harmony and simplicity. Present-day evaluation places him among the immortals of music by reason of his insight into the secret places of the heart and because of his awareness of ‘the magical new sonorities to be drawn from the piano."

Nicolaus Copernicus Nicolaus Copernicus was born on 19 February 1473. He was the youngest of four children. Copernicus neither married nor had children. Copernicus' epochal book, De revolutionibus orbium coelestium , published just before his death in 1543, is often regarded as the starting point of modern astronomy and the defining epiphany that began the scientific revolution. His heliocentric model, with the Sun at the center of the Universe, demonstrated that the observed motions of celestial objects can be explained without putting the Earth at rest in the center of the Universe. His work stimulated further scientific investigations, becoming a landmark in the history of science that is often referred to as the Copernican Revolution.

Casimir III the Great Casimir is the only Polish king who both received and kept the title of Great in Polish history. When he received the crown, his hold on it was in danger, as even his neighbours did not recognise his title and instead called him "king of Kraków". The economy was ruined, and the country was depopulated and exhausted by war. Upon his death, he left a country doubled in size, prosperous, wealthy and with great prospects for the future. Casimir the Great built many new castles, reformed the Polish army and Polish civil and criminal law. That gained for him the title of "the Polish Justinian”. original majestic stamp of king Casimir III the Great

Pope John Paul II The Venerable Pope John Paul II, born Karol Józef Wojtyła (18 May 1920 – 2 April 2005), reigned as Supreme Pontiff of the Roman Catholic Church and Sovereign of Vatican City from 16 October 1978 until his death on 2 April 2005. His was the second-longest documented pontificate - only Pope Pius IX served longer . He has been the only Slavic or Polish Pope to date, and was the first non-Italian Pope since Dutch Pope Adrian VI in 1522.

In 1996 she received the Nobel Prize for Literature. Vislava Shimborska Vislava Shimborska is a Polish poet, translator and eseistka. Her poetic style is based on the traditions of the 20 th century poetry and humanism. However, it is separated from the fashionable philosophical, artistic and cultural trends. And poems are filled with irony, paradox and jokes. In 1996 she received the Nobel Prize for Literature.

Henryk Sienkiewicz Henryk Adam Aleksander Pius Sienkiewicz, also known as "Litwos" (May 5, 1846 – November 15, 1916) was a Polish journalist and Nobel Prize-winning novelist. A Polish noble of the Oszyk coat of arms, he was one of the most popular Polish writers at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries, and received the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1905 for his "outstanding merits as an epic writer.“ Regarded as "The Patriot Novelist of Poland", he is perhaps best known for the widely translated and several times filmed epic historical novel Quo Vadis? (1896).

Roman Polanski He is an Academy Award winning film director, writer, actor and producer. He started making first movies during his study at the film school in Lodz, Poland, which gained him considerable recognition. In these first years of his career he was considered a brilliant person on the verge of genius. Best-known for films such as "Chinatown" ( 1974 ), "Tess" ( 1979 ), "Rosemary's Baby" (1986), and "The Pianist" (2002), he established himself as a major Polish filmmaker.
