P(D) Analysis of Spitzer 70 micron Maps ASI ReviewPadova ICC Contribution2 P(D) (i.e. Probability of “Deflections”) analysis is a technique allowing the extension of source counts below the confusion limit by modeling the effect of large numbers of unresolved sources on background fluctuations. The method was developed by Scheuer (1957) for use in the X Rays but later extended to Radio & IR in 1970s. In this phase we applied P(D) to the study of background fluctuations in Spitzer (FIDEL) 70 micron maps. We realized simulations based on our models of extragalactic IR populations, which were found to fit measured P(D) extremely well. We will now further test our implementation on Spitzer 24 and 160 micron maps and improve our treatment of noise and PSF for application to Herschel maps. Theoretical P(D) Gaussian Noise Convolution Histograms are P(D) measurements inside three different aperture radii Franceschini+ (2009)

ASI ReviewPadova Scientific Activities3 SWIRE and the HerMES Pre-Launch Database Multi-Wavelength Extragalactic IR Astronomy over >~50 deg 2 SWIRE provides uninterrupted spectral coverage over the NIR/MIR as well as a pioneering exploration of the extragalactic FIR universe over the largest areas. The availability of the SWIRE database is thus of the uttermost importance to achieve HerMES science goals. Under the auspices of the HerMES consortium, Padova has been assembling the HerMES Pre-Launch database, spanning from the UV to the FIR and thus putting the SWIRE Final Data Release into a wider context. This bridges the gap between Spitzer and Herschel but also ensures that HerMES early science will be supported by reliable multi-wavelength data. MIR/FIR Spectral Indices

ASI ReviewPadova Scientific Activities4 Ancillary Observations of HERMES Fields Spitzer Warm and Optical/NIR Imaging/Spectcroscopy  AF & MV are Co-Is of the 1400-hr Spitzer Warm SERVS program now obtaining IRAC 3.6 and 4.5 micron observations of ~20 deg 2 within SWIRE/HERMES fields  15 WHT nights approved to measure redshifts of MIPS 70&160 micron sources  Upcoming NOAO Survey Proposal for Optical/NIR Imaging/Spectroscopy SERVS ES1 Test DataLABOCA ES1 870 micron Map

HerMES SDP Planning ASI ReviewPadova Scientific Activities5  SDP targets chosen for HerMES were chosen so as to suitably validate most HerMES AOTs AND provide a glimpse of HerMES science to come  HerMES SDP program strikes a balance between covered area and achievable depth, based on detailed estimates of the number sources to be detected and on an intimate knowledge of available ancillary data

PEP & HerMES SDP Papers ASI ReviewPadova Scientific Activities6  Detailed SDP paper allocation process undertaken within PEP & HErMES  Giulia Rodighiero and Mattia Vaccari were eventually assigned the lead of PEP “Specific Star Formation Rate vs Stellar Mass up to z~3” and HerMES “FIR/SMM Local (0<z<0.5) Luminosity Function”, respectively, recognizing their long–standing ICC and GT KP work

ASI ReviewPadova Scientific Activities9 Long-Wavelength Cosmological Surveys in the Era of the Great Observatories Padova has been involved into long-wavelength studies of extragalactic populations since the 1980s and has consistently contributed to large-area survey projects carried out with IRAS, ISO, Spitzer and now Herschel SWIRE ~ 50 ☐ 2 SWIRE Fields observed by Spitzer & to be observed by Herschel GT KPs (PER & HERMES) interplay of deep and shallow observations in “nested” surveys

Where do we go from here?  Over the last 3 years Padova has been consistently  Contributing to SW development and testing effort by PACS and SPIRE ICCs  Working on defining and planning for PACS and HERMES GT KPs  In particular, we’ve been extensively contributing to  PACS/SPIRE DP testing and SPIRE GUI Development  Defining in detail Herschel Extragalactic Surveys “Wedding Cake”  Planning and scheduling HerMES Herschel observations  Obtaining essential ancillary data within HerMES Fields  Consequently we’ve been  Assuming a prominent role within HerMES and PEP KP teams  Assigned the lead of HerMES and PEP SDP papers  Fostering collaborations with colleagues old and new  Placing ourselves in an ideal position to best exploit Herschel data ASI ReviewPadova ICC Contribution10
