Cultural Variation Case Study: Marriage

Terms Cultural Universal: (George Murdock) customs and practices that occur in all societies Cultural Variation: the existence of different rules and practices in different societies Acculturation: cultural modification of an individual, group, or people by adapting to or borrowing traits from another culture a merging of cultures as a result of prolonged contact Social institution: a set of organized beliefs and rules that establish how a society will attempt to meet its basic social needs

Your thoughts???? For what reasons do people marry? Is marriage still an effective social institution?

For what reasons do people marry? Cultural survival (marriage is valued in most societiesas it is a tool to reinforce traditions through teaching of children) Strengthening the culture (when people marry within their own culture they bond 2 extended families and reinforce culture) Attraction/ sexual behaviour (maintaining stable/loving relationships) Companionship (meets psychological needs ie: emotional support, friendship, meets self esteem needs) Economics (combination of 2 financial sources and strengthens those of extended families)

Marriage in Canadian history In Upper and Lower Canada marriage governed by economic factors Age of Industrialization 19th century economic and social background/ class. (Introduced and chaperoned by families etc.) 1920s dating started when youth challenged traditions Today… romantic- marry someone you love Much more accepting definition of marriage

Traditions Wedding cake- “bunfest” Engagement ring Dress Best man Honeymoon Dowry
