Having Our Say journal “It was bad enough to be discriminated against by white people because I was colored. But then, my own people would discriminate against me because I was a woman” (Delany 178). “ And I realized he didn’t want to work on her mouth because she was colored. So I said to him, ‘You are not a doctor of dentistry! You are a doctor of segregation!’ “ (Delany 179). “But if a Negro did something stupid or wrong, it was held against all of us. Negroes were always representing the whole race” (Delany 186).
