Great Britain  Official Name : The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland.  Head of State : Queen  Head of Government : Prime Minister  Area : 242,514 sq km  Population : 60,209,500 people  Capital : London

Parts of London The City is the oldest part of London, its financial and business centre. The Westminster is the aristocratic official part of London. The West End is the richest part of London. The East End is an industrial district of London.

Places of interest in London The Houses of Parliament  It stands on the site of the palace founded by Edward the Confessor.  There one can see the famous Tower Clock Big Ben, the symbol of London. It is named after Sir Benjamin Hall.

Westminster Abbey It is the Cathedral where English sovereigns are crowned. It is the place where many outstanding English statesman painters, poets and musicians are buried.

The Tower of London  It is 900 years old.  It served as a fortress, a royal palace, a prison, a museum.  It is famous for its traditional Beefeaters.

The National Gallery  It is facing the Trafalgar Square.  It was opened in  You can find the greatest collection of painting in Britain (2200 pictures).

St. Paul ’s Cathedral  It is the greatest of English churches.  It was built by a famous English architect, Sir Christopher Wren ( ).  It is considered to be a fine specimen of Renaissance architecture.  In one of its towers hangs one of the largest bells in the world, Great Paul, weighing about 17,5 tons.

Trafalgar Square  It was so named in memory of the victory at the battle of Trafalgar, where on October 21, 1805 the English fleet under Admiral Nelson’s command defeated the combined fleet of France and Spain  In the middle of Trafalgar Square stands Nelson’s monument – the Nelson Column with the statue of Nelson 17 feet high on its top

The British Museum  It is the world famous museum  There are 4 kilometres of the space inside, split into nearly 100 galleries of treasures from everywhere in the world  The collection represents the progress of civilization  You can find here Rosetta Stone, the famous Magna Carta, Egyptian Mummies and a lot of more unique exhibits
