HOMEOSTASIS Section 6.6. Introduction 1. Muscle contraction provides heat to warm skin. 2. Muscles move bones, eyes, permits speech, and creates facial.
Muscular System Characteristics and Treatment of Common Muscle Disorders.
Fibromyalgia Chronic, widespread pain in specific muscle sites. Symptoms: Muscle stiffness Numbness or tingling in the arms or legs Fatigue Sleep disturbances.
The Muscular System. The muscular system works with the skeletal system You have approximately 650 muscles in your body.
INJURIES TO THE MUSCULAR SYSTEM. INJURIES TO MUSCLES Injuries to muscles can happen by: Tearing the muscle fibers Tearing or damaging the connective tissue.
Muscles. Muscles Skeletal muscles are attached to the bone of the skeleton. They are called voluntary muscle because they contain nerves under voluntary.
Muscular System Diseases and Disorders. Diseases and Abnormal Conditions Fibromyalgia- widespread pain in muscle sites Stiffness, aches, numbness, tingling.
Energy For Muscles Glucose + Oxygen = Energy to contract muscles and produce heat Glucose: stored in the muscles as glycogen Oxygen: used to burn glucose.

Muscle Injuries and Diseases Muscular System Muscle Injuries and Diseases http://www.slideshare.net/lavadoods/muscular-system-disease

Muscle Injuries 1. Strain- is the tearing or stretching of muscle fibers when they are suddenly pulled apart too far.

Treatment for Strain 1. Apply an ice pack to the affected area. 2. Take Analgesics.

2. Cramp It is an uncontrolled and prolonged contraction of a muscle accompanied by pain.

It is caused by build up of lactic acid in the muscle during of immediately after a strenuous exercise. Lactic Acid-Milk Acid

It is also caused by lack of oxygen in the muscle due to poor blood circulation when in awkward sitting position.

Treatment for Cramps Massage the affected area.

3. Bruise Discoloration of the muscle. Black and blue spot caused by the blood from the injured muscle (pasa).

Treatment for Bruises Cold compress to prevent swelling and ease the pain.

Diseases and Disorders of muscles and Tendons 1. Tendinitis is an inflammation or swelling of the tendons specially in the knees, heels, shoulders, and elbow.

Treatment for Tendinitis Doctors use anti-inflammatory drugs to cure tendinitis.

2. Trigger Finger The sheath around the tendon become swollen. The finger becomes swollen.

It is called trigger finger because when the finger unlocks, it pops back suddenly, as if releasing a trigger on a gun.

Treatment for Trigger Finger 1. Corticosteroid injection.

3. Infection A. Gangrene is the death of muscle tissues due to bacterial infection or the absence of blood supply.

Treatment for Gangrene The affected part is cut off.

4. Tumors It is an abnormal mass of tissue. It occurs mostly to women. It ussually develop in the uterus.

However, tumors (including “sarcomas” or malignant tumors) can occur almost anywhere. In this case it is the back of the thigh. http://www.sarcoma.org/publications/mcs/ch15.pdf

Treatment for tumor Operation

5. Myasthenia Gravis Or Serious Muscle Weakness The muscle become weak and tire easily.

Treatment of Myasthenia Gravis Continuous medication

6. Muscular Dystrophy An inherited muscular disorder in which the muscles slowly become weak.

Muscular dystrophies are characterized by progressive skeletal muscle weakness, defects in muscle proteins, and the death of muscle cells and tissue

Treatment for Muscular Dystrophy There is no known cure for muscular dystrophy. However, they should not be allowed to get overweight because this will make their condition worse. They should be active.
