What is I for safety ? I For Safety is a campaign developed to encourage everyone to take a personal responsibility for looking after the safety of ourselves and each other with the I from Biffa focusing on 1iii NDIVIDUAL responsibility. There is a clear aim to engage our colleagues by helping them to understand how to prevent incidents and accidents from occurring by being aware that the majority of incidents occur because of human behaviour

Example of our dedicated I for Safety Intranet page

Communication The “I” for safety behaviours have been a key feature in all the communications and training we have implemented as part of our cultural programme, which include; I for safety website pages Quarterly I for safety newsletter internal magazine Updated Safety Improvement Team Meeting Minutes Template Posters Vehicle PDAs Incident Reporting Behaviour Observation Forms (coming soon) DVD presented by the Chief Executive of the company Toolbox Talk and supporting notes Behaviour Stickers Commitment Postcards Location Questionnaire and Pledge Dedicated Health & Safety weeks at Individual Locations

Example of our “I” for Safety Newsletter

HSE Intervention visits Working together with the HSE Biffa work together with not just other waste companies but the HSE through the WISH forum and the ESA in finding ways to improve safety throughout the waste industry. Being the 2nd most dangerous industry in the UK visits are regular. Cooperation: An open book and an open mind Compliance: If any substantiated issue is found then we investigate and ensure that any remedial action is carried out at the earliest opportunity Communication: Communicated throughout Biffa. Collaboration: As a group we work together to find a solution.

Health and Safety Weeks These were developed to promote the “I” for safety ideology which started in our Industrial and Commercial Division who held dedicated Health & Safety weeks at locations across the country and has been successful in getting our colleagues ‘buy in’ to the safety concept and behaviours by understanding why we do things the H&S Weeks have had a positive result by engaging frontline staff and groups external to the business; our customers, clients, the Police, VOSA and many more. Since the introduction of Safety weeks our Near Miss and Hazard reports of increased greatly 85% Increase in Hazard Reports 53% Increase in Near Miss Reports 37% Decrease in Lost Time Injuries 44% Decrease RIDDOR Reportable Injuries 43% Decrease in the Lost Time Injury Rate amongst our BWS colleagues.

Results Due to the positive results from these Middlesbrough Municipal joined forces with Middlesbrough I & C to carry out a joint Safety week back in June and the results were so significant that Safety Weeks are being introduced throughout the Municipal Division. Middlesbrough Results: 281 Near Misses\Hazard raised 18 Different Tool Box Talks completed 321 Tool box talk/person All operational staff received Manual Handling training.

British Safety Council 5 star award for Safety Great Result in being awarded the 5* safety award as a group at the first attempt Environmental award gained Biffa 4* again at the first attempt Biffa is the first waste management company to undergo the British Safety Councils stringent audit of each of its divisions. Auditors examined documentation, records and record-keeping, observed staff behaviour and interviewed workers, and scrutinised overall health and safety organisation, management systems and controls, emergency systems, reporting of accidents, near misses and ill health, and improvement identification and implementation. The division was commended for its documented consultation and communication with staff, regular safety inspections and checklists, internal system and activity audits, risk assessments and development of safe work systems, effective promotion of risk areas such as near misses, health and safety administration, and the involvement of staff in purchasing personal protective equipment.

Biffa Safety Campaigns South Staffs . Implemented a hazard and near miss reporting initiative, resulting in excess of 750 reports from 46 employees in the previous financial year. Part of the success was due the introduction of a Near Miss / hazard raffle draw. This successfully raised awareness and maintained focus as well as accident prevention.. Working closely with our client South Staffordshire Council and Staffordshire Police, lead a local media campaign highlighting the dangers faced by my employees working on the public highway, article was published in the local media followed by the Daily Mail which then lead to a piece being done with Biffa on The One Show Installed 360 degree (four way) live web based cameras to the fleet of 16 vehicles used to monitor staff who predominantly work unsupervised. The objective is to use the system to further educate the employees by sharing the footage via live streaming on a wall mounted monitor in the depot and use this to ask “could this have been done safer?”, as well as recognising safety excellence and positive behaviours. This is also being used to fight false insurance claims and improve accident investigations.

Biffa Safety Campaigns Wirral: Cars on Pavements and violent acts of aggression Biffa, Wirral Borough Council and the Police have worked together and as a result a local process has been developed for the reporting of such incidents and for proportionate action to be taken in relation to them. An Employee charter was developed to ensure the full commitment of employees in reporting incidents of this nature. This has now been shared and taken on by other Municipal depots so that incidents of this nature can be actioned and reduced

Health and Safety Monitoring Crew Checks Supervision is an integral part of preventing accidents from happening, to ensure this is carried out with our field based employees we carry out a system of crew monitoring. This involves random visits from supervisors who carry out a set criteria of checks with questions based on the below areas: Transport & Vehicle Condition Pedestrian safety (operatives and members of public): Slips and Trips Manual Handling and the use of lifting equipment: Uniform/PPE/Hygiene Tools and Equipment Paperwork/Defect Checks/Near Misses/TBT’s Depots with 360 cameras have the ability to carry checks from a tablet near by before meeting the crew.

Safety Improvement Team Meetings The focus on these meetings on improvement and are attended by management, SHEQ, the client and members of the workforce Review of Health and Safety Statistics Review relevant Incident reports and near misses Review of progress against safety improvement plans (divisional objectives and KPI’s) Risk Assessments and/or safe systems of work for development/review Site Inspections - exceptional matters for benefit of group discussion Items from Safety Audits/HSE inspectors visits or Site walk around Training plans and effectiveness Review and adequacy of site safety arrangements including Fire Marshalls, First Aid Cover. (this may include the results of any fire evacuation tests or trials of site emergency plans) Review of changes of relevant Legislation Issues arisen since previous Safety Improvement Team Meeting
