Quiz – Chapter 10 Vocab Igneous rock – define 2 points
 Igneous rocks form when molten rock cools and solidifies. Molten rock is called lava when it is above the Earth’s surface and magma when it is below.
Igneous Rocks. Granite is a very hard rock. It does NOT weather easily. It is mined from granite quarries.

Topic: Relative Dating What is the usual order these meals are eaten during the day? A C B D.
Rock Cycle Unit Vocabulary 7 th Grade Science. Weathering The breaking down of Earth’s materials by natural processes (water, wind, ice, chemicals, etc.)
Chapter 5 “Igneous Rock”
Igneous Rocks. Igneous rocks  Are rocks formed from solidified/cooled magma  Are made of interlocking crystals  Interlocking crystals make strong rock.
Aim: What are the different types of rocks.
CHAPTER 14 ROCKS: MINERAL MIXTURES
 The composition, structure, position and fossil content of Earth’s rocks provide information about Earth’s geologic history.  The geologic history dates.
Earth Rocks Science & Minerals How are rocks classified?
Igneous Rocks Crystals -. Igneous Rocks. Cut these statements up and stick them in the right order in your book Lava is the name for magma which comes.
First, rocks are laid down and organized in units.  Sedimentary rocks are laid down in layers like a cake by wind and water. This process is called DEPOSTION.
Rock and Mineral General Review. 1.Intrusive igneous rocks have __ crystals. A. Small B. No C. Large D. Not enough information.

7.4.c Students know that the rock cycle includes the formation of new sediment and rocks and that rocks are often found in layers, with the oldest generally.

Relative Time: Ages of events are placed in order of occurrence. No exact date is identified.  Ex. WWI and WWII  Ex. I am the second child in my family.
 Volcanoes erupt and eject a flow of molten rock material, called magma.  Magma flows when it is hot and becomes a solid when it cools and hardens.
Reading the Rock Record
What is igneous rock? Any rock that forms from magma or lava
Earth Science Chapter 8: Rocks. Lesson 2: Igneous Rocks Learning Targets By the end of the lesson, I will be able to: 1.Explain how igneous rocks form.

TOPIC 13 – GEOLOGIC HISTORY. DATING ROCKS There are two ways to get the ‘age’ of a rock: 1.) RELATIVELY ex) Rock layer ‘A’ is older than rock layer ‘B’

TOPIC XIII INTERPRETING GEOLOGIC HISTORY
What type of geologic feature is this
How do we determine the age of rock layers?
Presentation transcript:

What type of geologic feature is this What type of geologic feature is this? (fold, fault, intrusion, inclusion) What type of stress caused this feature? (shearing, tension, compression)

What type of fold is this What type of fold is this? (anticline or syncline) What came first, the exposed rock layers or the fold? Which geologic law supports your decision?

Which of the layers is oldest Which of the layers is oldest? (A, B or C) Which geologic law supports your decision? A B C

The pink rock inside the shale is an igneous intrusion The pink rock inside the shale is an igneous intrusion. What came first, the intrusion or the exposed rock? Which geologic law supports your answer? Shale Igneous intrusion

Fossil Intrusion This is a picture of a small intrusion. If you look closely, there are fossils around the intrusion, but there are no fossils inside the intrusion. Why?

This large rock fragment is a volcanic bomb that was thrown almost half a mile during an eruption. Because it cooled down outside of a volcano, it cooled quickly. Is it an intrusive or extrusive igneous rock? What size crystals does it have? By looking at color and crystal size, what is the name of this type of igneous rock?

This photo shows lava ripples that formed as a lava flow cooled about 60,000 years ago. Assuming you took this picture, did the lava flow to your left or right?

You are looking at a tilted rock bed You are looking at a tilted rock bed. The white rock is limestone and the dark rock is a special type of shale called a mudstone. What type of weathering has caused the mudstone to weather faster than the limestone?

This is a picture of the cave entrance at Carlsbad Caverns, NM This is a picture of the cave entrance at Carlsbad Caverns, NM. Describe what type of weathering took place here. What type of topography has caused this cave to form?
