Who is in the painting? What do you think is going on in the painting? What is the message of the painting? Why did the author paint this?

Between 1500 and 1800 a new kind of monarchs developed in Europe. They all had similar characteristics. Today we are going to come up with a definition for this new kind of monarchy and give it a name.

Key Terms Monarchy- – King/Queen Legislature- – law making body, usually made up of representatives of the people Tsar- – title used to designate Russian monarch Checks and Balances – a system in which the different parts of a government have powers that limit the power of other parts
