What conflicts developed between the northern and southern states following the American Revolution?

The economy in the northern part of the United States was more industrialized and the southern part was more agricultural. The south relied on slave labor for its agriculture. Northern states wanted the new states created out of the western territories to be “free states”. Southern states wanted new states to be “slave states.”

How did the southern states join together and who was their leader? After the southern states seceded from the Union, they formed the Confederate States of America, with Jefferson Davis as their president.

Who was a Confederate general who played a major role in the Battle of Bull Run or Manassas? General Thomas “Stonewall” Jackson played an important role in the Battle of Bull Run or Manassas.

What was the importance of the Battle of the Monitor and the Merrimack? President Abraham Lincoln used the Union navy to blockade southern ports. The sea battle between the Monitor (Union) and the Merrimack (Confederacy), two iron-clad ships, took place in Virginia waters near Norfolk and Hampton. The battle was fought to a draw.

What was the importance of the Battle of Richmond? Since Richmond was the Capital of the Confederacy, it sustained many attacks from Union forces.
