The Coming of the Civil War

Kansas Nebraska Act Review  The Kansas-Nebraska Act gave Kansas voters the right to do what?  Choose or reject slavery Sketch depicting “Bleeding Kansas”

John Brown’s Raid Review  What was the greatest impact of John Brown’s raid on Harper’s Ferry?  The raid deepened the division between North and South.

In April 1860, the Democratic party splits over slavery.  Southern Democrats want the government to protect slavery in the territories.  Northern Democrats stand by the idea of popular sovereignty.

What is popular sovereignty? Letting the people of the territories decide whether or not they will allow slavery there.

Southern Democrats end up nominating John C. Breckinridge to support their program. Northern Democrats nominate Stephen Douglas to support their’s. At the same time, moderate Democrats who had been Whigs formed a new party & nominated John Bell.

The newly formed Republican party nominates Abraham Lincoln.  At the time, he was little known after serving just one term in Congress in the 1840s.  But Lincoln had a moderate approach to slavery that included standing firmly against its spread in the territories.

The election proved the divisions between North and South were beyond repair. Even though his name didn’t even appear on some southern ballots, Lincoln won every free state except New Jersey and captured the presidency.

Lincoln was the clear winner, even without Southern support.

Who is going to be upset about the Election of 1860? Why?

Southerners were outraged that Lincoln had won without any of their electoral votes. They didn’t feel involved in the federal government at all, strengthening their feelings about state’s rights.

Secessionist: person who wanted the South to leave the Union.  Believed they had a right to leave because they had joined the union voluntarily. Confederate States of America: nation created by the states of the Lower South when they seceded from the Union.  Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, Florida, Georgia, South Carolina

Complete the secession timeline activity using pages 371 through 373 in your book. This timeline will become part of your notes… make sure you keep it!
