 A large farm in the South where many slaves worked

 The system of secret routes for enslaved African Americans escaping the South

 To break away from a nation or organization

 A war that is fought among people in the same country; the north and south fought against each other

 The name the seceded Southern states called themselves

 The name the Northern states were referred to

 The period following the Civil War in which the United States Congress passed laws that would help rebuild the country

 Many African Americans experienced this unfair treatment before and after the war

 Being able to provide for almost all one’s own needs

 All the businesses that make one kind of product or provide one kind of service
