Math Practical Problems for Animators Setting a Budget Copyright © Texas Education Agency, All rights reserved.

How does an animator decide what to charge for a project? How does an animator arrive at a price for their movie? What overhead expenses does the animator need to consider? What is the profit margin amount after overhead expenses and production have been taken out? Copyright © Texas Education Agency, All rights reserved.

Read the Scenario Your teacher will give you a handout with the scenario on it. This scenario is something everyone in media needs to figure out for every job. Once you have figured out your overhead and understand how long it takes to complete a job, you can figure out the costs. Copyright © Texas Education Agency, All rights reserved.

A Pro Works With Data A pro doesn’t guess – they research, ask around, and gather real data. Sonya (in the scenario) needs to find out a lot of information to make a reasonable bid. She looks to her old bills, time logs, and asks sub- contractors for estimates as part of her data gathering process. Once she does one bid, much of the information is good for the next one, but she must still make sure the data is current. Copyright © Texas Education Agency, All rights reserved.

….and a Profit How much should the studio make over cost? What is competitive pricing? What about residuals? Are they a factor at all or is that where the profit comes in? Can you think of anything else? Copyright © Texas Education Agency, All rights reserved.

Look at the numbers In the handout, look at the numbers Sonya is using. Do you agree with them? Why or why not? Copyright © Texas Education Agency, All rights reserved.

Problem 1 What is Sonya's monthly overhead to run her animation business? What is the daily and hourly overhead rate? Rent + Equipment + Software + Overhead = ? Cost per month/20 workdays per month = Daily rate Daily rate/8 hours a day = Hourly rate Copyright © Texas Education Agency, All rights reserved.

Problem 2 How long should it take for Sonya to pre-plan, create, and post-production this project? What is the industry standard for the time it takes to do a second of animation? Should she use this number? Why? Who can she go ask to figure out time estimates? She is adding 10% to the time for glitches. Is that reasonable, too long or too short? Copyright © Texas Education Agency, All rights reserved.

Problem 3 What is Sonya’s hourly rate? What can a beginning animator expect to make a year? You can find this on O*net. Should this number be before or after taxes? SSI, Federal, State and Local Taxes. Copyright © Texas Education Agency, All rights reserved.

Problem 4 What is Sonya’s business costs per hour? Hourly Overhead + Hourly Salary (Hourly Overhead +Hour Salary) number of hours it takes to do the project = Cost of the project before added expenses and profit. Copyright © Texas Education Agency, All rights reserved.

Problem What is Sonya’s total cost of the project? (Hourly Overhead +Hour Salary) number of hours it takes to do the project = Cost of the project before added expenses and profit Add project specific expenses such as subcontractor costs, traveling, special equipment and supplies. Add profit Copyright © Texas Education Agency, All rights reserved.

Final Thoughts Is this a reasonable number to charge for this project? How do you find that out? Being competitive vs. making a living wage Spec (from speculative) work. Is it worth it? What should YOU, a student, charge for a local project? Copyright © Texas Education Agency, All rights reserved.
