S Deoghuria and S Sinha Indian Association for the Cultivation of Science Kolkata , INDIA Institutional Repository at IACS in the context of National Open Access Initiatives: A Status Report

Overview Background IR and National Initiatives IACS IR Results Future Scope Conclusion

Background Rapid development in the field of information technology and knowledge dissemination Bandwidth Availability IR - to showcase the scholarly output of an Institution IR to achieve more citations Interoperability makes IR more visible

IR and National Initiatives  National Knowledge Commission transforming India into a knowledge society  National Knowledge Network building quality institutions with requisite research facilities advancing human development in critical and emerging areas  National Knowledge Resource Consortium A single point entity that provides its users with access to a multitude of open access resources

Indian Association for the Cultivation of Science (IACS) Oldest research institute in India (1876) premier institute doing research in frontier areas of basic sciences Has its own registered domain (iacs.res.in) IACS website is accessible till April 1998 IACS website is fully SEO enabled It is developed and designed indigenously The URL of IACS is

IACS IR URL: Interoperable: Launched on November 12, 2010 Registered with the handle server ( on April 12, 2011http://handle.net Registered Users: 33 Research Papers submitted: 104 Total theses submitted: 4

Objectives of IACS IR Maximise the impact of the research carried out at the institution Preserve the intellectual memory of IACS already produced and being produced in digital forms Accelerate the progress of science.

Problems with IACS IR Slow adoption Researchers at IACS are either unaware of IR or Aware of its existence but remain detached from it Potential Users: 500 Registered Users: 33 Average research papers published per year: 450 Average theses published per year: 35 Total research papers submitted: 104 Total theses submitted: 4 No of Items Submitted through Self Achieving: 5

Feedback from Researchers They do not perceive the potential benefits of using such a system They are extremely careful regarding what concerns publisher rights Some researchers recognize technology as a barrier in the use of IR Researchers feel that self-archiving is an additional task and they are already overburdened with their usual research work

Future Scope and Conclusions to convince the authority to implement a mandated self-archiving policy as well as offering a incentive to promote self-archiving a thorough promotional plan for researchers Value added services for researchers like customised DSpace software to accommodate personal web pages of researchers in IR Awareness-raising and advocacy efforts are to be continued for researchers Different reports related with IR access are to be shared with researchers Un-necessary concern about Copyright is to be removed RSS feeds is to be implemented with IACS IR
