Debunking the ‘Model Minority’ Myth: Using Cutting Edge Data Webcast May 21, 2014

Discussion I: “Why ‘Model Minority’ Is a Myth?” Dr. Rupali Doshi, HAB Medical Officer Dr. Michael Lu, Associate Administrator for MCHB

“Why ‘Model Minority’ Is a Myth?” Myth 1 states that the “model minority” myth suggests that Asians have reached equality with Whites and parity existent. Myth 2 -- The “model minority” myth reinforces the idea that simply working harder or smarter will assure that individuals can overcome disadvantage and discrimination. In addition, the “model minority” myth assumes that individual equity is attainable. Myth 3 – The “model minority” myth perpetuates the notion that Asians are fully included in the political discourse; that they do not face racism; they have no social inequities; and do not face some problems as other minority groups.
