Presentation transcript:

PENTATEUCH The central message: Promised redeemer (Gen 3:15) A chosen people (Gen 12:2-3) Blessing to all nations (Gen 15:6)

PENTATEUCH The role Moses plays: God sends a man (Ex 3:10) “Set my people free” (Ex 3:21-) Passover (Ex 12) Tabernacle (Num 7:1-) Inheritance (Deut 31:1-) Wilderness wanderings

PENTATEUCH Moses the leader: God always calls a man (Ex 3) Delegation (Ex 18:1-. Num 11:29. Deut 1:9-18) Handling opposition (Num 16) Courage (Num 13-14) Selecting leaders (Num27:12)

PENTATEUCH Always bearing in mind we have to read with New Covenant glasses. Looking back thru the Cross: Deuteronomy 7:7 So I want you to realize that the LORD your God is God. He is the faithful God. He keeps his covenant for all time to come. He keeps it with those who love him and obey his commands. He shows them his love. (vs10) But he will pay back those who hate him. He'll destroy them. He'll quickly pay back those who hate him.

Old Covenant (Law) vs New Covenant (Grace): 1. Moses’ commission was confirmed by Gods voice when he saw a bush on fire. Jesus’ commission was confirmed by Gods voice when he was Waist deep in water. 2. Moses’ first plague was turning water into blood (Ex. 7:16-18) Jesus’ first miracle turned water into wine. (John 2:7 -11)

Old Covenant (Law) vs New Covenant (Grace): 3. Law given was given fifty days after Passover results in 3000 dying. (Ex. 32:28) Fifty days after the crucifixion came Pentecost resulting in 3000 being re born! (Acts 2:41)

Old Covenant (Law) vs New Covenant (Grace): 4. The law repelled man (Ex. 19:10-12) Grace attracts man Hebrews 10:21 and since we have a great priest over the house of God, 22 let us draw near to God with a sincere heart in full assurance of faith, having our hearts sprinkled to cleanse us from a guilty conscience and having our bodies washed with pure water.

Old Covenant (Law) vs New Covenant (Grace): 5. The Law was based on works (Ex. 19:5-8) Grace is based on faith. (John 3:36) 6. Lepers were outcasts (Lev. 14:3) Lepers got healed (Luke 5:12)

Old Covenant (Law) vs New Covenant (Grace): 7.The law emphasizes what you must do (Ex. 20:13) Grace points to what He does

Old Covenant (Law) vs New Covenant (Grace): Hebrews 8: But God found fault with the people and said: “The time is coming, declares the Lord, when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and with the house of Judah. 9It will not be like the covenant I made with their forefathers when I took them by the hand to lead them out of Egypt, because they did not remain faithful to my covenant, and I turned away from them, declares the Lord. 10This is the covenant I will make with the house of Israel after that time, declares the Lord. I will put my laws in their minds and write them on their hearts. I will be their God… (NEXT PAGE…)

Old Covenant (Law) vs New Covenant (Grace): Hebrews 8: …and they will be my people. 11No longer will a man teach his neighbor, or a man his brother, saying, ‘Know the Lord,’ because they will all know me, from the least of them to the greatest. 12For I will forgive their wickedness and will remember their sins no more.”

Old Covenant (Law) vs New Covenant (Grace): 8. The law came with blessing and curse (Deut. 27:12-15) Deuteronomy 30:19 This day I call heaven and earth as witnesses against you that I have set before you life and death, blessings and curses. Now choose life, so that you and your children may live

Old Covenant (Law) vs New Covenant (Grace): Grace comes with ‘blessing to blessing’ (Gal. 3:13) John 1:16 From the fullness of his grace we have all received one blessing after another. 17 For the law was given through Moses; grace and truth came through Jesus Christ.

Old Covenant (Law) vs New Covenant (Grace): 9. Sin is visited to the third and fourth generation (Deut. 5:9) Sin has been completely wiped out. Hebrews 10:16 “This is the covenant I will make with them…… 17 Then he adds: “Their sins and lawless acts I will remember no more.” 18 And where these have been forgiven, there is no longer any sacrifice for sin.

Old Covenant (Law) vs New Covenant (Grace): 10. The Law is referred to as inferior 2 Corinthians 3:7 Now if the ministry that brought death, which was engraved in letters on stone, came with glory, so that the Israelites could not look steadily at the face of Moses because of its glory, fading though it was Grace is referred to as superior.

Old Covenant (Law) vs New Covenant (Grace): Grace is referred to as superior. 2 Corinthians 3:8 - 9 will not the ministry of the Spirit be even more glorious? Vs 9 If the ministry that condemns men is glorious, how much more glorious is the ministry that brings righteousness!

Old Covenant (Law) vs New Covenant (Grace): 11. Circumcision of the flesh (John 7:22) Circumcision of the heart. Colossians. 2:11 In him also you were circumcised with a circumcision made without hands, by putting off the body of the flesh, by the circumcision of Christ

The primary purpose of appreciating these contrasts is to keep us free from religion and joyful in Grace 1 Corinthians 1:1 - 7 For I want you to know, brothers, that our fathers were all under the cloud, and all passed through the sea, 2 and all were baptized into Moses in the cloud and in the sea, 3 and all ate the same spiritual food, 4 and all drank the same spiritual drink. For they drank from the spiritual Rock that followed them, and the Rock was Christ. 5 Nevertheless, with most of them God was not pleased, for they were overthrown in the wilderness. 6 Now these things took place as examples for us, that we might not desire evil as they did. 7 Do not be idolaters as some of them were; as it is written, “The people sat down to eat and drink and rose up to play.”

Exodus 34: John 5:21 Dear children, keep yourselves from idols
