Key Points for Today’s Lesson Review last week’s class found in Chapter Study Deuteronomy Review the laws regarding first fruits and tithes Learn how the Israelites were to praise God and that God on that day declared them His special people Learn about the first altar to be built, words to be inscribed and how it was to be used. Learn about blessings and curses

Last Week Reviewed more laws related to the 8 th through 10 th Commandment Examined various laws found in Deuteronomy including laws related to: –Slaves –Vows –Providing to the poor –Treatment of others –Charging interest –Family law including marriage, divorce, and remarriage

Pentateuch In Context Man can experience God’s blessing through trust and obedience Genesis – man is a finite creature made in the image of God, fallen in sin, unable on his own to enjoy a relationship that God Exodus – human sin leads to enslavement Leviticus – reveals more fully that man is a sinner and that he is different and separate from God Numbers – shows redeemed sinners enjoying the benefits of atonement but fall away Deuteronomy – God loves us, we should love God

Historical Background Title in Hebrew is ‘elleh haddebarim – meaning “these are the words” English title Deuteronomy means “second law” in Greek – However, it isn’t a second law, it merely restates/explains the law as Moses already given Written around 1406 BC, shortly before Moses dies on the plains of Moab Written by Moses – See 1:5, 9; 5:1; 27:1, 8; 1 Ki 2:3; Matt 19:7-8; Acts 7:37-38; Rom 10:19

Historical Background Continued Contains primarily history and instructions and is similar to Leviticus –Preached, not taught All events take place across the Jordan river from Jericho on the plains of Moab Within a few weeks prior to Israel’s entrance into Canaan

Hebrew Calendar

Geographical Background Israelites traveled from Mt. Sinai to the plains of Moab – East of Jericho and the Jordan River However, not a direct route – Proceeded from Sinai to Kadesh Barnea – On Canaan’s southern border Failed to proceed to the Promised Land from Kadesh Barnea because of unbelief – Wondered 38 more years in the wilderness God finally brings them back to Kadesh, then led them to the Plains of Moab on Canaan’s eastern border Book of Numbers picks up in the final days leading up to Israel’s crossing of the Jordan river as outlined in the book of Joshua

Key Lessons Of Deuteronomy God desires to bless people through a relationship with Him This blessing can be experience through trust and obedience We as the sinner redeemed are servants of God our master God loves people and we should love God God manifested His love for Israel through laws Israel demonstrated love by obeying these laws

Bring the first fruits and tithes (vs. 1-4) – Promised Land was west of the Jordan River – Israelites are to bring the first produce from their plantings in the new land – Set it near the altar Words of thanks and praise to be given (vs. 5-10) – Upon delivering the first fruits and tithes, Israel is to give a confession of thanksgiving to God – Remembers the history of Israel from the time of Jacob living in Canaan to Egypt and the Exodus – NIV say Jacob was Aramean, KJV says Syrian Instructions (26:1-15)

Rejoice (vs. 11) – God gives to us and when we give back, we rejoice Prayer for the giving of the tithe (vs ) – Every third year the tithe was given not only to the Levites, but also the stranger, fatherless, widow (see Num 18:21-24) – Give in a prayerful state of mind Instructions (26:11-15)

A call to complete obedience (vs. 16) – Moses intercedes on God’s behalf, telling Israel to keep the commands displayed in chapter 4 to 26 Israel’s proclamation (vs. 17) – The Lord is their God – They will walk in His ways and keep His statutes God’s proclamation (vs ) – Israel’s obedience to the Lord would be rewarded – God would set them above all nations Moses’ Exhortation to Israel (26:16-19)

Command to set up a special altar (vs. 1-8) – Moses finishes preaching to the people concerning the law – Directed to write all the words of the law on stones atop Mount Ebal, whitewashed for easy reading – Directed the Israelites to build an altar on Mount Ebal – Peace offerings to be presented as well as a memorial to the law – Joshua 8:20-32, this was fulfilled People of God (vs – On this day, the Israelites became the people of God The Special Altar (27:1-10)

Those who will bless the people who obey God – Will stand on Mount Gerizim – Include Simeon, Levi, Judah, Issachar, Joseph, and Benjamin Those who will curse the people who disobey God – Will stand on Mount Ebal – Include Reuben, Gad, Asher, Zebulun, Dan, and Naphtali Fulfilled in Joshua 8:32-35 Division of Tribes (27:11-13)

Ebal and Gerizim

Ruins of Gerizim

Levites review curses for those that break the covenant and commands of God – People answer “Amen!” to every declaration – “So be it!” or “Truly!” Curses – Idolaters – Those that dishonor parents – Those that steal – Those that are cruel In Christ, we are blessed not because of obedience but because of our position with Him Declaration of Curses (27:14-26)

Review Reviewed Deuteronomy Reviewed the laws regarding first fruits and tithes that would be given every third year Learned how the Israelites were to praise God and that he declared them His special people Learned about the first altar to be built and that the laws of God were to be inscribed Learned that the altar was used for sacrificing to God Learn about blessings and curses Next week: Classes meet in the auditorium, two weeks from now study Deuteronomy 28
