God’s Justice as compared to God’s Grace

God’s Justice as compared to God’s Grace God’s Justice as compared to God’s Grace “even when we were dead in trespasses, made us alive together with Christ (by grace you have been saved),” EPHESIANS 2:5 “For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; [it is] the gift of God, “ EPHESIANS 2:8

God’s Justice as compared to God’s Grace God’s Grace is MUCH different than Justice or Mercy: Justice is getting what we deserve Mercy is not getting what we deserve Grace is getting what we do not deserve (Thank you God for your Grace)

God’s Justice as compared to God’s Grace Sin is a transgression of God’s law – I John 3:4 (lawlessness) ALL have sinned - Romans 3:23 The Penalty for Sin is Death - Romans 6:23

God’s Justice as compared to God’s Grace “Real Life” Example – “Justice” - An individual commits a “Serious Crime”, (transgression, lawlessness) one that the penalty is “death”. Taken before the Court to get “Justice” what is deserved for the crime. Sentence is passed – “death” = JUSTICE.

God’s Justice as compared to God’s Grace God’s Justice - getting what we deserve - “all have sinned” God is “JUST” - “Righteous” PSALMS 89:14 – these are the foundation of His throne. As a result of His Just nature he cannot be indifferent to sin. He Can not be associated with SIN in any manner. He is perfect, His Work is Perfect, He is “truth and without injustice” DEUTERONOMY 32:4 Could strike us dead and still be “JUST”.

God’s Justice as compared to God’s Grace “Mercy” The sentence of “Death” is “Pardoned” Someone “intervened” and what that individual Deserved is now taken away, removed. They did not get what they deserved. The same can be said of God’s Mercy When we were dead in sin – God granted mercy – pardoned us when we did not deserve the pardon.

God’s Justice as compared to God’s Grace Mercy is God’s attitude toward those who are in distress. A mother once visited Napoleon on behalf of her condemned son. The emperor told her the young man had committed the same offense twice, and justice demanded the death penalty. “But Sire,” she pleaded, “I don't ask for justice -- only for mercy.” “He doesn't deserve it,” said Napoleon. “No, he doesn't,” she admitted, “but it would not be MERCY if he deserved it.” Napoleon granted her request.

God’s Justice as compared to God’s Grace Not only is it God’s desire to extend mercy to those who deserve justice for their sin. It is also His desires to impart His grace which is even more than the act of mercy….

God’s Justice as compared to God’s Grace (Our example cont.) “Grace” The criminal, the one “pardoned” (Mercy) is given a “new life” - starts over again. This person received something that he/she “DID NOT DESEVRE” “even when we were dead in trespasses, made us alive together with Christ (by grace you have been saved),” EPHESIANS 2:5

God’s Justice as compared to God’s Grace Grace is something that is unearned and it is undeserved. The Apostle Paul wrote that if it is something we have earned, it has become a reward and it is not a matter of grace, but of debt, something owed. “Now to him who works, the wages are not counted as grace but as debt.” ROMANS 4:4 God owes us nothing.

God’s Justice as compared to God’s Grace God makes His grace known through His offer of forgiveness for the sins that we have committed. It is by His grace that one is saved from sin. “For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, not of works, lest anyone should boast” Ephesians 2:8-9.

God’s Justice as compared to God’s Grace Man’s true condition before Christ- "But your iniquities have separated you from your God; and your sins have hidden His face from you, so that He will not hear." - Isaiah 59:2Isaiah 59:2 “But we are all like an unclean thing, and all our righteousness are like filthy rags;" - Isaiah 64:6Isaiah 64:6 We are all Guilty

God’s Justice as compared to God’s Grace OUT OF "LOVE", GOD HAS PROVIDED HIS Son Because God loved us, He sent His Son to die that we might have eternal life - Jn 3:16; 1Jn 4:9Jn 3:16 1Jn 4:9 2. Because God loved us, He made His Son a "propitiation" for our sins - 1Jn 4:101Jn 4:10 a. A "propitiation" is a sacrifice designed to appease God’s demand for Justice b. Therefore God has offered His Son as a sacrifice designed to appease Himself, to deflect His anger away from us - which leads to a related point...

God’s Justice as compared to God’s Grace OUT OF "JUSTICE", GOD HAS PROVIDED HIS SON To satisfy His justice, God provided redemption through the blood of His Son - Romans 3:24-26 Romans 3:24-26 “being justified freely by His grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus, 25. whom God set forth [as] a propitiation by His blood, through faith, to demonstrate His righteousness, because in His forbearance God had passed over the sins that were previously committed, 26. to demonstrate at the present time His righteousness, that He might be just and the justifier of the one who has faith in Jesus.”

God’s Justice as compared to God’s Grace 2. God's grace therefore functions in this way: a. God's justice requires an appropriate sacrifice for sin b. Because He loves us, He provided His own Son as that appropriate sacrifice for sin c. God recognizes the death of Jesus on the cross as a suitable ransom for our sins, “paid in full!” 3. God’s Justice is satisfied and Grace is Bestowed –But it is not because we did anything to deserve this.

God’s Justice as compared to God’s Grace To Receive this Grace one must Obey God, His Son and the Holy Spirit Jesus is "the author (or source) of eternal salvation to all who obey Him," - Hebrews 5:9Hebrews 5:9 Salvation is by grace, and "not by works of righteousness which we have done" - Titus 3:4-5aTitus 3:4-5a But by God's mercy, He saves us "through the washing of regeneration and renewing of the Holy Spirit" - Titus 3:5b Titus 3:5b

God’s Justice as compared to God’s Grace An individual is united with Christ by baptism into His death, and therefore rises to walk in newness of life- Romans 6:3-8 Galatians 3:27 This is where God’s WORK is COMPLETED - Colossians 2:12 One’s Sins are washed away - ACTS 22:16 Made alive !

“And you He made alive, who were dead in trespasses and sins”, EPHESIANS 2:1 “But God, who is rich in mercy, because of His great love with which He loved us”, EPHESIANS 2:4 “even when we were dead in trespasses, made us alive together with Christ (by grace you have been saved),” EPHESIANS 2:5 “For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; [it is] the gift of God, “ EPHESIANS 2:8

God’s Justice as compared to God’s Grace Do not assume that because of “God’s Grace” that it allows us to continue walk in sin, commit sin and not receive the due recompense of reward for doing so – Romans 6:1,2 1. “What shall we say then? Shall we continue in sin that grace may abound? 2. Certainly not! How shall we who died to sin live any longer in it?”

God’s Justice as compared to God’s Grace Justice is getting what we deserve Mercy is not getting what we deserve Grace is getting what we do not deserve Thank you God for your Grace

“Let us therefore come boldly to the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy and find grace to help in time of need”. Hebrews 4:16
