Great Moments in Public Speaking

Who is/was a great speaker? Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Bill Clinton Oprah Winfrey Bill Cosby Adolf Hitler Vince Lombardy Dr. Phil McGraw John F. Kennedy Sir Winston Churchill Eleanor Roosevelt Sojourner Truth Booker T. Washington Barack Obama Mahatma Ghandi Malcolm X Cesar Chavez Susan B. Anthony John Stewart

What made/makes them so great? Credible Enthusiastic Articulate Funny Passionate Inspiring Sincere Visionary Confident

Don’t forget the basics! Poise, Body Language Volume, Tone Eye contact Speaking crutches Enthusiasm, Energy Movement Hand gestures Appropriate language Comfortable outfit

Know Yourself What is your style? How familiar are you with the content? Do you need to practice? What are some tried and true icebreakers? What are your speaking crutches? Who has given you constructive criticism? I obviously enjoy the “Socratic Teaching Method” which uses guided questioning to create dialogue

Know Your Stuff Confidence comes from knowing your material The more you present on the same topic, the more comfortable you will be Those who are flexible presenters may actually suffer from over-preparation Does your presentation cover your learning objectives? Where can stories, jokes, or examples fit in? (Adapted from “Facilitation: Blending Style & Expertise,” The LeaderShape Institute, LeaderShape Inc.)

Know Your Audience Cultural Competence (jokes, terms, slang) Ask ahead of time if there are people who need audio, visual, or mobility accommodations Quick and easy show of hands at beginning serves as an icebreaker and informal needs assessment Avoid unfamiliar acronyms

The Millennial Generation Millennials are individuals born in or after 1982 Traits described by Howe and Strauss in the book Millenials Rising: Special Sheltered Team oriented Achievers Conventional Appreciate humor!

Technology Pointers Yes, you must know PowerPoint Yes, you MUST double check your technology before your class/session starts Yes, clickers are user-friendly and very familiar to most college students

Technology Pitfalls NO- you don’t have to show a video or go to YouTube NO- you don’t have to incorporate social media- what makes a good presentation is the connection between presenter and audience Bottom Line: Technology is meant to compliment your presentation, it is not the presentation in and of itself

The PowerPoint Power TEN 1.No complete sentences, bullet main points 2.Do not read every word on every slide 3.Fonts need to be plain and large enough to read

4. Avoid distracting slide transitions 5. Utilize clip art to make it less boring 6. Use Google Image Search to supplement clip art

What works? A review checklist Content- is it “need to know” or “nice to know” Delivery strategies- know yourself, your material, and your audience Opportunities for interaction Team activities or educational games Appropriate use of technology

Typos make you look like an idiot 8. Hand-outs are different than a copy of every slide 9. Crop your clip art and pictures- check pixilation (tool bar- “Format”- far right is crop) 10. Beware of PowerPoint 2007 versus earlier versions
