7 Bureau Veritas S.A. internal use only – BVN TM ELEC1 – V0 – December 2009 Electrical equipment ► General The class rules are related to essential services All services which are not essential are not considered by the rules as far as they do not interfer with essential services Definition of the essential services is issued from IACS interpretation SC 134 Essential services are those services to be supplied by the main source and considered on the electrical load balance as necessary power for minimum sizing of generators

The main lighting system for those parts of the ship normally accessible to and used by personnel and passengers is also considered (included as) a primary essential service.

No common switchgear for two primary non duplicated essential services. Protection of circuits is to be such that the fault in one circuit does not cause the loss of any essential services (Selectivity so as to obtain continuity of supply + design) Fire pump 1 Fire pump 2 Not acceptable if there are only 2 pumps !!

It doesn’t mean that BV ask to test all the electrical components

Air Conditioned Areas – Different values may be considered Salt mist : 1 mg/m3 of air Sea water temperature : General 0°C to +32°C. For ships classed for service in specific zones different values may be accepted Inclination Vibration EMC – Levels to be assumed are those given Pt C, Ch 3, Sec 6 or IEC 60533

19 Bureau Veritas S.A. internal use only – BVN TM ELEC1 – V0 – December 2009 Electrical equipment ► Environmental conditions - (EMC) Solas V Regulation 17 defines requirements concerning the ElectroMagnetic Compatibility of electrical and electronic equipment installed on the bridge or in the vicinity of the bridge. It refers to the recommendations developed by the organization: Resolution A813(19). This electrical and electronic equipment need be tested for conducted and radiated emission only. A813(19), dated 23/11/1995, refers to IEC and IEC IEC : Maritime navigation and radio-communication equipment and systems - General requirements - Methods of testing and required test results. IEC : Electrical and electronic installations in ships - Electromagnetic compatibility. A813(19) refers to A694(17), dated 06/11/1991. A694(17) asks to take “all reasonable and practicable steps to ensure compatibility between the equipment concerned and other radio-communication and navigational equipment carried out on board.

20 Bureau Veritas S.A. internal use only – BVN TM ELEC1 – V0 – December 2009 Electrical equipment ► Protection against explosive hazard Electrical components are not to be installed in hazardous zones Design of components in hazardous zones to be in line with IEC Several kind of design are available which are adapted to the hazardous zone Installation of components in hazardous zones to be in accordance with BV rules (in line with IBC or IGC code) Tables located in Part D are defining, according to the location, the acceptable electrical equipment for the zone (Ex component) Label plates of the Ex components clearly indicate for which gas and temperature the component is appropriate Each Ex component is supplied with a certificate delivered by a competent body, recognised by national authorities

23 Bureau Veritas S.A. internal use only – BVN TM ELEC1 – V0 – December 2009 Electrical equipment ► IP rating - Definition The I.P. rating system provides a means of classifying the degree of protection of an item from dust and water afforded by electrical equipment and enclosures. The system is recognized in most countries and is set out in a number of standards including IEC The format for the I.P. rating is indicated by two digits: The first numeral indicates The protection of persons (human body) against access to dangerous parts. Depending of the voltage, an adequate clearance is to be kept between the access probe and dangerous parts (LV: no touch – HV: withstand dielectric test). The protection of equipment against the ingress of solid foreign objects. The second numeral indicates protection of internal equipment against harmful ingress of water.

36 Bureau Veritas S.A. internal use only – BVN TM ELEC1 – V0 – December 2009 Various electrical equipment - Cables Flame Propagation Test on Bunched Cables IEC Category A (7 l / m ; 40 min) Category B and C not accepted CEI 20-22/3 IEC CEI 20-22/3 This test evaluates the flame propagation of a bunch of cables each 3,5 m long. The number of test pieces should be in accordance with one of the three categories in order to provide the required total volume of non-metallic material per meter of mounted cables. The cables are mounted on a rung ladder in a metal cabinet and are subjected to burning by a ribbon flame at 750°C for a specified time. The cables must not burn for more than 2,5 m.

The duration of test and flame temperature are stated by standards. During test (and after this in case of IEC and CEI 20-36), cable must continue to operate; no break or short circuit should occur in the cable. Overall Diameter 20 mm : IEC * 830°C with shock * Cancels and Replaces IEC since May 2009
