| Review Day Business. Thematic review Using CollectIt Paper Question. HW – Papers due for Friday on CollectIt. – Tomorrow is Emerson. Read Nature, at through the “Beauty” chapter. We will be talking about what the project is here.

Review Theory Saussure Sontag Barthes The Symbol, Meaning Hawthorne Melville Evidence, Reason, Narrative Poe Auster To this point our class has been focused on unseating several assumptions about reading, writing, language, interpretation and meaning-making. With a partner, go through a set of readings and identify what assumptions they seem to complicate, how they are complicated, and what we are left with.

Theory Saussure – Sontag – Barthes – Questions?

The Symbol, Meaning Hawthorne – Melville – Questions?

Evidence, Reason, Narrative Poe – Auster – Questions?

Why do all this? The reason we are unseating these assumptions is to get past some hangups we have about reading, writing, and meaning making. I am hoping that you can take these complications and apply them in other contexts. More specifically, for this class, I am hoping that your papers will reflect the style of reading we have been discussing in class, no matter what topic you choose to write about. What does that mean? – Be careful when you refer to an author – Be leery of the ‘simple’ answer, look for complications. – Don’t trust true, ultimate meanings and don’t write as if there is one. – Likewise, look out for symbol addition and broad generalizations. – Avoid writing about things you can’t know: author’s intention, author’s psychology, reader’s reaction, etc. Stick to what you do have, ie. The text. – Others?

Coming Up… Emerson Poetry – Pound/Eliot – William Carlos Williams – Gertude Stein Agee / Evans Danielewski In the next half of class, we will attempt to work within our new parameters. Given what we learned in the first half of class, these writers are trying to think through our relationship with reality as mediated by language, subjectivity, and imagination.
