Motivation….. Lesson Objectives – Understand the difference in the 2 main types of motivation. Understand how motivation can affect sporting performance.
Motivation comes from within the performer. INTRINSIC Motivation comes from within the performer. Self motivated People participate because it’s fun, to keep fit, to socialise, for pride etc
Motivation….. Motivation comes from possible reward. EXTRINSIC Motivation comes from possible reward. Externally motivated. Can be money, trophies, recognition, praise etc.
How can motivation affect performance? 1) How would motivation affect you as an official? 2) How would motivation affect you as a sports leader? 3) How would motivation affect you as a participant?
Official…. Intrinsic….. Sense of achievement. They enjoy it. To keep fit. To allow other people to participate. Pride. To feel in charge.
Official….. Extrinsic….. To get paid. To be seen. To get respect. To get recognition.
Sports leader….. Intrinsic…… Pride. Sense of achievement. They enjoy it. To see people develop. To help other people.
Sports leader….. Extrinsic….. To get recognition. To get awards.
Participant….. Intrinsic….. To achieve your goals. To do something you enjoy. To feel as if you’re part of a team. To socialise. To keep fit.
Participant….. Extrinsic….. To get paid. To win trophies. So other people see how skilful you are. So people want to emulate you.
Task…. In pairs create a collage of sports performance and how it is affected by motivation.
