BELLWORK What were some characteristics of the Industrial Revolution? What were the new advances in communication? What is the transcontinental railroad? What is a nationwide business? Name an example. What were some important inventions during the Industrial Revolution? THINKER: What are some characteristics of a successful business?

Big Businesses Today we are going to read about the tremendous growth in big businesses during the Industrial Revolution. While reading, answer the following questions in your notes. Use complete sentences!!! Pages 208-209 How did large companies, like the Pennsylvania Railroad, operate their business? What is a merger? What is Horizontal integration? Vertical Integration? How are the two similar? Different?

Carnegie vs. Rockefeller As we have just read, Carnegie and Rockefeller were two of the world’s most successful businessmen. They used different methods to create their industrial giants. With a partner, you will create a Venn Diagram. One person will read about Andrew Carnegie and the other will read about John D. Rockefeller. After both people are finished, you will discuss the similarities. Be ready to talk about this as a class!!!

Big Business Assignment You are going to create your own “big business.” In your business plan, you must include: Name of your company Description of your business (what it does, goals, purpose, specialties, etc.) It must be either a merger, horizontal or vertical integration. Explain how & why your company uses this method. Drawing: either a logo or advertisement Remember: you are a BIG BUSINESS. You need huge profits and investments so make a good and convincing business plan!! This must be relevant to the Industrial Revolution!!! Whoever has the best or well-thought out business plan will receive extra credit! (I.E. you’re getting a good profit or investment from Ms. Bruggeman)
