Medinfo 2013: 10x10 International Collaboration Jeffrey J. Williamson, M.Ed. AMIA Vice President of Education and Academic Affairs

Medinfo 2013: 10x10 International Collaboration Outline o Overview of types of programs and the i10x10 model o Why international collaborations are working o Challenges to sharing o Future of translating 10x10 and other informatics education programs o Credits

Overview and i10x10 Types of US-based informatics programs that might be translated o National Library of Medicine (NLM) o Stand alone graduate programs o Certificate programs o General continuing education informatics programs

Overview and i10x10 We must invest not only in technology, but also in the education, training, and healthcare professionals who have knowledge and skills beyond clinical training. Every hospital, clinic, and healthcare organization will need professionals versed in informatics to assist with implementation, use, and success of health IT systems. — Don E. Detmer, MD, MA, Past AMIA President

Overview and i10x10 o What does an AMIA 10x10 partner look like? - Demonstrated ability to deliver a high-quality educational experience - Deliver approximately the equivalent in workload and sophistication of a three credit, graduate level course

Overview and i10x10 o What does an AMIA 10x10 partner look like? (con’t) - Offer the content primarily through distance learning technologies, with at least one face-to-face session with students during the course - Provide instruction that is aligned with AMIA's mission, vision and goals

Overview and i10x10 We require that proposals provide… o Can deliver a distance learning program - Number of past courses and students taught - Infrastructure to support on-line teaching o Goals, intended audience and prerequisite level of education o Course format and structure - e.g., weekly lectures with readings, individualized instruction, project-based learning, etc o Include a description of instructional materials

Overview and i10x10 Proposals provide (con’t) … o Syllabus that lists the specific course sessions by topic with measurable learning objectives for each session including desired competencies upon completion o A description of the face to face component o List of faculty involved in the delivery of the course, including specific role of each in the course and evidence that each faculty member has the requisite informatics expertise

Overview and i10x10 The Emergence of i10x10 with the Informatics Community… o 10x10 established in North America o Collegial desire to translate and/or export 10x10 course o Financial constraint in applying US business model

Overview and i10x10 The Emergence of i10x10 with AMIA… o A desire by AMIA to increase capacity in low to medium resource countries - Notion of global citizenry a clear of objective in mission, visions, goals of organization o Aligned with other AMIA efforts of the time - Bellagio conference - Rockefeller Foundation-funded HIBBs - Gates Foundation-funded Global Partnership Program

Overview and i10x10 The i10x10 metaphor… o International in scope o Internet-based dissemination (blended with) o In-person instruction at point of need o Informatics (of course!)

International Collaborations Why Now? o Consensus around informatics education requirements including competencies, certification, and accreditation - BMI Core Competencies for Graduate Education (JAMIA) - CI Core Content and Training Requirements (JAMIA) - IMIA Program Accreditation - AMIA’s Consideration of Accreditation with CAHIIM o Emergence of Formal “Communities of Practice” - AMIA’s Academic Forum includes international programs

Challenges to Sharing o Intellectual property o Translation from US-based education context - Language, cultural, socio-economic, learning environment o Country-specific health care delivery models - Fee for service v. insurance-based v. government sponsored health care o Gatekeeper for patient information differs by country o Regulatory, organizational, and financial differences impact course design and content

The Future of i10x10 and Beyond Collaborative Global Informatics Education o Informaticians from around the world have developed their own training capacity o US-based educators remain eager to grow informatics capacity domestically and beyond o Promise in the bi-lateral exchange of knowledge - Not just one-way learning! o Focus on acute points of need o Tread with caution but remain hopeful

Credits Thank you… o Fellow panelists o John Holmes, University of Pennsylvania o Eta Berner, University of Alabama Birmingham - Informatics Education in Healthcare: Lessons Learned (Health Informatics), Springer, In press o Medinfo Organizers o AMIA
