TEXAS THE LONE STAR STATE

Americans wanted Texas Early 1800’s Texas part of Spain Spain refused to let Americans in Moses Austin granted a land auction or grant Mexico won independence from Spain New agreement Stephen Austin & settlers could move in Granted a large land grant Mexico wanted Americans to move in under an agreement

The Agreement With the land grant the settlers agreed to: Become Mexican Citizens Worship as a roman catholic 1821-300 settlers moved in with Austin 1830-20,000 Americans in Texas

Mexico tightens Laws First settlers had an agreement with Mexico Others that followed did not feel they had the same loyalty Most Americans were Protestant and spoke little Spanish Conflict soon erupted 1830 law passed forbidding any more Americans from moving into Texas

Mexico Feared: Americans wanted to make Texas part of the U. S. (and they did) U. S. tried to buy it once in 1826 and 1829 Passed a law banning slavery Passed law on worshipping as a roman catholic Texans (Americans) resented this & troops came to reinforce them

Santa Anna: 1833 Santa Anna came to power (general) A revolution overthrew old government Once in power he threw out the Mexican Constitution Rumors were Santa Anna intended to drive all americans from Texas

Action from Texas: Texans felt they needed to take action The had support from Tejanos (Mexicans who lived in Texas) Tejanos hated Santa Anna Texas is still part of Mexico U. S. did not give assistance at this time

See Texas Forever Free from The Fight Begins Oct. 1835 the fight starts at Gonzales Texan forces troops to withdraw Texans inspired the aimed to See Texas Forever Free from Mexican Domination In two months Texans take San Antonio Santa Anna Furious wants to put down rebellion and marches North with huge army

More from the fight Texans declare Independence in March 1836 Called it “Republic of Texas” Still not part of U. S. Sam Houston commander of a volunteer army (Texans) Santa Anna arrived and fewer than 200 Texans remained Texans refused to give up moved into Spanish Mission The Alamo

The Alamo Inside little food, ammunition and medicine No warm clothing Only 187 Texans against 6,000 troops William Travis (hardly a man) a boy commanded the Alamo Famous frontiersmen Jim Bowie and Davy Crockett

Shots fired Inside Alamo Shots fired First ones deadly and surprised the Mexican army 3-4 rifles by each man 3-4 shots to every one shot Alamo needed help and sent a messenger Received an additional 60 men

Final Seige Daily bombardment by army 12 days the Texans held off the Army March 6, 1836 Cannon fire finally broke through wall of Alamo (Thick Walls) Thousands of Mexican Soldiers rushed in

Anger over outcome Body Count 183 Texans and about 1,500 Mexicans Five survivors-including Davy Crockett All survivors promptly executed Slaughter angers Texans Cry for REVENGE Others die and volunteers flood into Sam Houstons Army including men from U. S.

Texan Independence REMEMBER THE ALAMO Sam Houston organized army April 1836 – time to attack Santa Anna near San Jacinto River Texans charge Mexican army with cry of: REMEMBER THE ALAMO

Battle of San Jacinto This battle lasted on 18 minutes Outnumbered killed 630 Mexicans and captured 700 others Santa Anna escaped Captured the next day Forced to sign treaty granting independence to Texas

The Lone Star Republic Still not part of the U. S. Flag has a single star Nickname “Lone Star” Republic Constitution was based on U. S. President is Sam Houston

Huge Problems Mexico refuses treaty still claims Texas Texas nearly bankrupt To solve this needs to annexed into U. S. Divisions in U. S.= South is for; North is against The issue is slavery Andrew Jackson feared a war with Mexico U. S. refused annexation
