Mexico tightens Laws First settlers had an agreement with Mexico Others that followed did not feel they had the same loyalty Most Americans were Protestant and spoke little Spanish Conflict soon erupted 1830 law passed forbidding any more Americans from moving into Texas
Mexico Feared: Americans wanted to make Texas part of the U. S. (and they did) U. S. tried to buy it once in 1826 and 1829 Passed a law banning slavery Passed law on worshipping as a roman catholic Texans (Americans) resented this & troops came to reinforce them
Santa Anna: 1833 Santa Anna came to power (general) A revolution overthrew old government Once in power he threw out the Mexican Constitution Rumors were Santa Anna intended to drive all americans from Texas
Action from Texas: Texans felt they needed to take action The had support from Tejanos (Mexicans who lived in Texas) Tejanos hated Santa Anna Texas is still part of Mexico U. S. did not give assistance at this time
