 Relocated Natives to lands West of the Mississippi  Paid Natives to move to Indian Territory  Land set aside specifically for relocation

 Refused to give up land in GA  1832 – Federal troops marched Cherokee west TRAIL OF TEARS  Many suffered from exposure, disease and starvation, many died. including 4,000 of the 15,000 relocated Cherokee.  Indian Reservations are still common today.

 Spanish wanted people to settle land in Texas  By 1830, Texas had more Americans than Spanish  Santa Anna – president of Mexico  Refused to sell to US and stopped immigration and trade

 1836  Americans barricaded inside mission  Held off Mexicans for 12 days  Mexicans attacked, wall collapsed – killed everyone inside  “Remember the Alamo”

 1836  Treaty signed with Santa Anna  Created Texas Independence

 Feb 1848  Mexican Cession – California/New Mexico  $15 million

 1853 – US paid Mexico $10 million for the strip of land  To expand the railroads
