Human Interaction with Intelligent Transportation Systems Committee Meeting 3 – August 24, 2011

Agenda Committee Mission Framework for Implementing Technology in Vehicles Liaison between ITSA, SAE, ITU, and CEA World Congress Discussion Panel Featured Speaker: Dr. Linda Angell (VTTI) –Using Technology to Prevent and Reduce Distraction

Mission To develop an understanding of the issues pertaining to drivers' use of ITS-related technology while driving To disseminate this knowledge to the ITS America members so that it can be effectively leveraged

Transportation System Design Personnel subsystem components arranged serially –Driver is the only component that can perceive, decide, and initiate driving response for a vehicle –Total Reliability = R1 x R2 x R3 x … x Rn –Total reliability always below weakest link Driving task demands can exceed driver capabilities Driver error accounts for 45% - 75% of roadway crashes Technology can increase system reliability by arranging components in parallel to driver functions –Both driver and vehicle sensors can perceive threats –Both driver and algorithms can decide responses –RT = 1 – (1-R1)(1-R2)(…)(1-Rn) –Total reliability always greater than most reliable component –Key is for driver reliability to not degrade with additional components –e.g., Driver reliability dependent on HMI and trust in technology

Potential Ways to Safely Implement ITS Driver-Optimized Interfaces –Needed to safely deliver information and mitigate driver distraction Driver Assistance Systems –Travel advisory systems to improve driver expectation Route selection, road and weather conditions –Indirect viewing systems to improve spatial awareness –Collision warning systems to direct attention to crash threat –Collision avoidance systems to initiate avoidance maneuver if driver fails to do so –Autonomous and semi-autonomous vehicles Workload Management –Needed to adjust/deactivate technological components when driving task demands are high Combination of Efforts –Help to uphold driver reliability –Increase total system reliability by adding redundancy from driver assistance systems

Committee Liaisons ITSA Safety Forum member requested we establish a liaison with SAE’s DVI committee –SAE DVI committee’s objective is to provide expertise on Driver Vehicle Interface (DVI) issues pertaining to drivers engagement in discretionary secondary tasks –Chaired by Linda Angell (VTTI) and Jim Foley (Toyota) SAE DVI committee also extending reach to ITU’s and CEA’s working groups on driver distraction Currently working to establish quarterly meetings amongst committee representatives to establish a coordinated research effort

World Congress Session Mitigating Driver Distraction through HMI Design: A Proposed Conceptual Framework for Safely and Effectively Implementing Technology in Vehicles Experts amassed to discuss the unison of: –Driver Assistance Systems Raymond J. Kiefer, Ph.D. - Technical Fellow, GM Global Active Safety Electronics & Innovation, General Motors Company –Driver-Optimized Interfaces Thomas B.
