Mystery Box Activity 8/21/14

Bellwork 8/21 Look at the picture to the right. Record 3 observations Make 3 inferences

Activity All data and answers are to be recorded on the left page of your interactive notebook. Do Not touch the brown paper bag at your station until directed to. Do not open any of the brown paper bags.

Mystery box activity Purpose: To learn to make accurate, unbiased observations and inferences. Intro: One of the most powerful skills of a scientist is their ability to make accurate, concise observations. To do this well, they must use all of their senses. This activity is to help you practice using you observation and inference skills.

Observation Observation: information through the senses. I saw.. I heard… It tasted…. Example: Zarya is wearing a red shirt.

Inference Inference: an interpretations derived from an observation, fact, prior knowledge, and/or other premises. I think… I believe… Nikki sneezed. She might have a cold.

????Brown paper bags ????? You and your shoulder partner will try and answer the following questions without opening the brown paper bag. You may lift the brown paper bag. You make shake the brown paper bag. JUST DO NOT OPEN THE BAG.

For each of the bags your team is able to investigate answer the following How many objects are in the bag? What size is the object or objects? What are they made of? What does it look like? Record 3 observations about the contents of the bag. What do you believe is in the bag? This is an inference!
