Program Completion Information 127 credits 2.5 overall GPA 67 credits General Education 60 credits Education courses 4 Blocks 124 credits 2.5 overall GPA 48 credits General Education 76 credits Education courses 4 Blocks, plus 1 summer/some evenings ElementarySpecial Education

Understanding the Application Process Application deadline for Spring is October 15 Application deadline for students starting Block 1 in Fall is February seats available: first come-first served.

Application Criteria 55 credit hours (including current semester) towards General Ed. requirements  Cannot count developmental courses in 55 credits EDUC-F200, SPCH-S121, ENG-W131, MATH-T101, all completed with a “C” or better. “C-” does not count Completed, or be enrolled in, ALL Language Arts content courses Overall GPA of at least 2.50 (no rounding up) “C” or better in all L-Arts and Math content courses. Passing score on Praxis 1 tests or alternatives

Application Criteria Successful Completion of ONE course from the Social Studies Content Block (“D-” or higher) Elementary: ECON-E100, E150, or E101 (Economics) POLS-Y103 (Introduction to American Politics) GEOG-G201 (World Regional Geography) HIST-H101 HIST-H105 or H106 (American History I or II) SOC-R220 (The Family) Special Education: POLS-Y103, Y107, Y109 (Political Science) HIST-H105, H106 (American History) or GEOG-G110 (Human Geo.) SOC-S163 (Social Problems) or GEOG-G201 (World Reg. Geo.)

Application Criteria Successful Completion of ONE course from the Science Content Block (“D-” or higher) Elementary: BIOL-L100 (Humans & the Biological World) CHEM-C104 (Physical Science & Society) GEOG-G107 (Physical Systems of the Environment) Special Education: BIOL-L100 (Humans & the Biological World) CHEM-C104 (Physical Science & Society) or CHEM-C101 (Elementary Chemistry I) NOTE: To complete program, one science course must include a lab; but the lab is not needed before you apply.

2.5 Grade Point Average and Praxis I – PPST Pre-Professional Scores Elementary and Special Education IUS GPA of 2.5 Must maintain throughout program! Must have attempted the Praxis I (Passing Scores) Math 175 Reading176 Writing172

PRAXIS 1 Alternative Scores PRAXIS 1 = Composite of at least 527 or individual scores Math 175, Reading 176, Writing 172 ACT = At least 24 based on Math, Reading, Grammar, and Science SAT = At least 1100 for Verbal and Math, NOT Writing GRE with a score of at least 1100 based on Verbal and Quantitative Anyone with a Master’s Degree from a regionally accredited institution is exempt.

Taking the PRAXIS 1 Paper and Pencil Tests  Available at IU Southeast - More expensive  Scores available within 6 weeks Computer-based Tests  Prometric Testing Center, Lagrange Rd, Louisville ( )  Prometric University of Louisville ( ) Writing scores available in approximately 2 weeks. Praxis can be taken once each calendar month no more than six times during any one calendar year. Praxis Scores are available on-line for about a month be sure to save as a PDF—costs $40+ for another report!

Studying for the PRAXIS Praxis Registration Information brochures are available on the wall outside the Student Development Center and in SOE Advising Suite Preparation materials for Praxis are available from ETS (some for sale) in the Library and Bookstore Allow yourself about one month to prepare and study Study with a friend or establish a study group

You won’t be taking any other general education courses while in blocks. Block 1 – Child as Learner Block 2 – The Literate Child Block 3 – Integration across the Curriculum Block 4 – Teaching in an Era of Accountability Special Education students will take 1 summer block and some evening classes. What does is it mean... Getting into Blocks?

Field Experience ALL blocks include field experiences at specific schools both in Indiana and Kentucky. It is MANDATORY for students to be available Monday through Friday from 8:00 – 4:00! Practica schedules will be set early in each semester.

What Else…? Continue taking courses that are requirements for your degree  Set a goal to finish General Education classes before Block 1 Make an effort to take ENG-W 250 (W 131 is pre-requisite) and MATH “T” courses as soon as possible—they fill quickly Keep a close watch on your GPA Faculty may review a student’s status at any point in the program If you need to anyone, please include your student ID See your SOE faculty advisor at least once a semester
