AIR POLLUTION LIVABLE KATHMANDU

BACKGROUND Our problem is of unique kind ; most of the polluted cities around the world are troubled by industrial pollution ; We are only suffering because we couldn’t manage the ongoing road expansion, ban old vehicles and construct proper side drains. Kathmandu is rapidly Urbanizing city in Asia Kathmandu is supposed to be the most attractive tourist destination but reality is that tourist wants to escape Kathmandu as soon as they land here to other places. In some cases they shorten their trips and leave Nepal for other destination. Nepal stood at 177 out of 178 countries on 'Yale 2014 Environment Performance Index'

STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM Geographically Kathmandu is bowl shaped valley that traps the pollution within preventing the natural dispersion of pollutants. People leave their home early morning to comeback home with headache, eye, ear, skin and respiratory problems. Every year more than 1600 people die of air pollution. Air pollution Unmanaged Road Expansion Unmanaged Side Drains Vehicles

Policy No master plan to envision the city with clean air WHERE DID WE GO WRONG

Streets alienate Pedestrians and Cyclist

WHERE DID WE GO WRONG Poor State of Public Transportation Increasing Private vehicle

WHERE DID WE GO WRONG Lack of Greenery Minimum of 10 % greenery required for a livable city ; Kathmandu has only 4% of greenery Indifferent Government Lack of understanding of how grave and real the situation of air pollution is. Brick kilns 120 in number ; contributing 11% of PM 10

WHAT DID WE RECOMMEND Master plan Policy to support the master plan. Prepare Road and Environment Management plan To Prevent the generation of dirt and dust during construction related works Block roads and provide temporary route during the construction period Foot path; cycle lanes and maintaining greenery around the road

WHAT DID WE RECOMMEND Management of Vehicle and Transportation system. Re-route and separate routes according to the type of vehicle Focus on running big buses and discourage Small sized vehicle Introduce BRT Discourage Private vehicle by introducing Vehicle Miles Travelled (VMT) tax. Promote EVs (Electric Vehicle) and Hybrid cars and make necessary policy changes to abate existing Customs and introduce subsidy.
