Shaffer LEADER December 2010 Congratulations to all the students who performed in Shaffer IDOL 3. Your talent was truly awe- inspiring! Bravo to the students honored at Shaffer’s first Honors Assembly for their academic achievements, citizenship and attendance records. Keep up the great work! Thank you to all the parents who turned out for these two great events, as well as to those who made our Fall Fundraiser and Staff Appreciation Luncheon successful. We couldn’t do it without you! December may be a short month on the school calendar, but it will be long on events! Don’t miss the Band & Orchestra Concerts, the Holiday Sing a-Long or the PTO Meeting! May all faculty, students and their families have a blessed holiday season. See you at Shaffer where there’s always something happening! for and updates! Teacher Tidbits/Box Tops & Labels In Kindergarten, we are learning letter sounds and rhyming words from our Storytown series. We are reading Mrs. Wishy-Washy’s Farm and learning all about farm animals! Parents, remember to read to your child each day and ask them to count to you daily by 1s, 5s, and 10s. Second Grade would like to thank all of those who helped and participated in the Veteran’s Day Program. We are proud of how respectful our students were during the program, and are especially proud of those students who helped with the program. GREAT JOB Shaffer students! Second grade is working hard on writing letters, paragraphs and narratives. Cold weather is on it’s way, so don’t forget to dress your child with coats, hats and gloves as we will still be going outside. And from Fifth Grade’s Ms. White: students must complete 7 book reports in the current grading period to meet their 25-book standard goal. Please encourage students to read over the winter holiday break. Make it a goal to do at least two book reports! Leading with Labels! Thanks to everyone who sent in Box Tops, Labels for Education (Campbell’s, etc.) and Tyson’s A+ labels this fall. Mrs. White’s class was the winner of our fall contest with 211 labels turned in. Keep clipping during the holidays! We will have our winter contest in January. Labels may be sent in at any time – just include student name and teacher on envelope/baggie so the class will get credit for the next contest. Thank you!

Nurse’s Notes & Savvy Shopping From the Desk of Mrs. Walter ‘Tis the season for... head lice!’ With the holiday season comes many gatherings of family and friends. Because lice transmissions occur through head to head contact and families and friends will be in close quarters over the holidays, I would like to pass along some reminders to keep lice away. Educate your children: 1) remind them not to share brushes, combs, hats, towels or hair accessories. 2) check your child’s hair on a regular basis for evidence of head lice. Holidays are a time when families travel to the home of relatives and spend the night. 1) be sure to bring your own pillows and bed linens. For more information regarding head lice, go to: Reminder: Parents of K, 6 th or new enterers to school, if you have not turned in your child’s physical examination paperwork from the doctor to Nurse Walter, please do so ASAP. Parents of K, 3 rd and new enterers, please give Nurse Walter your completed dental forms ASAP. Have a safe and healthy holiday season! Shop ‘Til You Drop! The Shaffer Library will be transformed to the Shaffer Holiday Shoppe this week! Classes will shop at assigned times Tuesday through Thursday and on Friday morning, make-up day. Please send cash and a list of persons to shop for in an envelope marked with your child’s name and teacher. All items are only $1 including tax! We need lots of heroes to help students with shopping and wrapping - - send a note to school or if you can help.
