EVERYDAY LIFE DURING RENAISSANCE PERIOD Rayce and Kyler

RENAISSANCE HOUSING  Houses during this time were just as one would expect  Small  Simple  Beds would be shared by multiple family members Houses were so small that when they used their fireplace to cook in the house, the smoke would travel throughout the house and become very hot. During the summer, the women couldn’t cook in the house because the temperatures would become to extreme in the house, so they cooked outside.

HOUSE DESIGN  House Design  Symmetrical  Balanced  Lots of windows  Built around inner courtyard  Staircases began to be featured

MONEY  There would be market places in town where people would go and shop for goods.  Every major city that there was had its own money value because the value of coins would change on a short basis.  Smaller towns would have special days where merchants would come in and set up shop and sell there goods that they brought to make money.

FAMILY ROLES  The roles of men and women were just as one would predict.  Women stayed home and tended house and children  Men worked in the fields or usually in merchant shops.  Older children, both girls and boys, would work alongside their father most of the time and not the mother to help make more money.

CHILDHOOD  Children back during this period got much more respect from adults. By the time they were about ten years old, they would dress similar to adults and be spoken to just like they were adults. However, they weren’t completely classified as adults because they still had toys and games that they would play with.  This may sound as a joke to you, but toddlers during this time were often strained to a wooden walker, to prevent them from going off on there own and to keep them safe from boiling pots or fires around the house.  House fires were very common during this time!

CHILDHOOD Boys  Boys would end up going to a private school ore be tutored if they family could afford it and if they couldn’t, many of the times they would go to a wealth home and work as a servant to them. Girls  Girls wouldn’t really go to school because they would learn how to run a household. They would also go and work for a wealth family if they were poor. They were considered a girl until they married and if they never married they aren’t considered fully grown.

BLACK PLAGUE  The presence of this terrible disease marked the closing of almost all businesses and shops. This event affected daily life more than any even that has ever occurred.  The thing that made this disease even more scary was that no one knew what the disease was and was a complete mystery.

COURTSHIP  The main goal of marriage during the Renaissance was to have children and not so much for love.  However, this usually only occurred for more royal and wealthy families.  The families that consisted of merchants or peasants, which were generally poor, married for love and not so much just to produce children.

FASHION AND MANNERS  Fashion varied greatly throughout the country. Many people wore beautiful and detailed costumes. More popular clothing styles were hoods, ruffs, and wigs.  Sitting at a dinner table during this period may gross you out. People would eat with their hands and not utensils like now. You would also see more disrespectful manners of people. People would burp and just be snobs at the dinner table.

SPORTS Team Sports The most popular ones were  Hunting  Rounders  Battledore  Gameball  Hurling Individual Sports  The most popular ones were  Archery  Billards  Fencing  Hammerthrowing  Horseshoes

ENTERTAINMENT  There were many forms and different kinds of entertainment during this time.  Music and dancing was a huge part to entertainment during the Renaissance  The rich and noble would enjoy fine arts and also blood sports such as bull or bear baiting.  The poor couldn’t afford theater plays, so mainly the noble went to the plays.  The poor would mainly attend events like executions or witch trials.  Witch trials were when mainly old and single women would get blamed for unexplained events like a house fire or even if there is a bad harvest.

BULL OR BEAR BAITING  Bull or bear baiting was a very popular sport during the Renaissance.  This was a contest in which gamblers would bet on trained bulldogs attacking a strained bull.  The bull would be tied up and the gamblers would bet on which dog they think will survive. In England mainly bulls would be used because of the cost of bears.  They would be taken place in famous arenas, the most popular one being Bull Ring Theatre.

INTERESTING FACTS  The invention of the printing press was a big factor to the daily life in the Renaissance because now this makes the availability of books.  Ballet was first invented during this time, which made people want to dance even more, which affects there daily life.  The nobles favorite foods were large birds.
