Yang Liwei is the first Chinese astronaut to go into space. He travelled for fourteen hours on October 15, 2003 and circled the earth twenty-one times. R: Where did you train? Y: At a special place in the Gobi Desert called “Space City”. Of course you have to be fit but I’m also lucky to be short and light so I was considered to be right for an astronaut. It was a wonderful chance but I had to work very hard. R: How tall and heavy are you? Y: I’m a bit shorter than 170cm and less than 70kgs. R: Was it safe in your space rocket? Y : Yes. It was fitted with a special seat to throw me out of the space rocket if things went wrong as it lifted off. There are also a special door for another space rocket to rescue me if there were problems in space.
