 OUR SMALL GROUP - Comprised of 4 males volunteers -Targets to provide tutorial class for 8 th grade students in MCCDP. - Members have relevant educational backgrounds. Back Ground Info contd…

PROJECT RATIONALE WHY ETHIOPIA?

 Why Ethiopia? Because…. - A third world country with poor educational infrastructure and system. - Teacher to student ratio is 1:90, average number of students in one classroom is 62. hence students didn’t get appropriate follow up from their teachers. Project Rationale

PROJECT RATIONALE WHY OVC’S?

 Why Orphan and Vulnerable Children(OVC)? We select OVC’s for our project because… - more than half million OVC’s found in Addis Ababa only. - Almost all of these children show poor performance in their schooling and/or drop. - Most of these kids don’t have adults to monitor or to help them in their studies. - Older OVC’s look after their younger siblings in every aspects as a result don’t have time to study. Project Rationale contd…

PROJECT RATIONALE WHY 8 TH GRADE STUDENTS?

 Why 8 th Grade Students? We select 8 th grade students because…. - We want to start, do and assess our tutorial project in a few specific group of students. - 8 th grade students have a national examination that enables them to transfer to high school, hence need help. - The examination date (May 29, 2011) perfectly corresponds to CMST course time frame. Project Rationale Contd…..

PROCESS, STRATEGIES AND IMPLEMENTATION.

 Introduction and Assessment Participatory approach - An assigned member of our group introduced the idea of our project to MCCDP project workers and kids. - Nine 8 th grade students found and were willing to attend the tutorial class. Process, Strategies and Implementation

 Introduction and Assessment Participatory Approach cont... - Together with students an initial assessment is done to select the effective method of tutorial. - The discussion with students also indicate the priority subjects for tutorial. - Mathematics, English, Chemistry, Physics and Biology. Process, Strategies and Implementation…

 Implementation of the Project The tutorial class doesn’t follow the traditional way of teaching. Instead we used two methods -One – to – One study Approach. - Questions and answers.. Process, Strategies and Implementation cont….

 One to One Approach - Members help students in their study on one to one basis. - This helps to effectively help students in their specific area of difficulty. - This approach also make students to help each other. better students help those who need help. Process, Strategies and Implementation

 Question and Answer Approach - Our group used questions from text books and previous years national examination as the main tool to provide the tutorial class. - This approach helps students to identify what type of questions are expected in the national examination. Process, Strategies and Implementation.

 Psycho – Social Support - At the final week of the tutorial class students are counseled and motivated so that they can be psychologically ready for their examination Process, Strategies and Implementation.

 Time Frame of tutorial class - Members carried out the tutorial class 2 times a week (for 3 hours) for 3 weeks. - Tutorial class are provided in English, Mathematics, Chemistry, Physics and Biology subjects. Process, Strategies and Implementation...

OUTCOMES AND FEEDBACKS

-The students had their final national examination on May 29, More than 88 percent of the students said the tutorial class was very helpful. They said they encountered similar type of questions in the examination. - All students said the counseling and encouragement was very significant for them. Outcomes and Feedbacks

FUTURE DIRECTIONS
