What do you think is made of iron? Iron does go rusty, it flakes away, which allows more iron to rust. Rust = Corrosion
Corrosion Is caused by a chemical reaction (two reactants) of metals in which they dissolve away. Reaction between oxygen (air), metal and water (vapour, humidity or condensation). Decreases the strength of metals. Gold & Platinum do not corrode. If you were to live near the ocean, the salty air can corrode aluminium window frames and doors.
How do we stop Corrosion? - Covering the metal with paint, oil or plastic or another metal. - Sacrificial protection (coating of zinc or magnesium) used on underground petrol tanks, steel boats and bridges. - Galvanising (dipped into molten zinc)
