AFDO - Michigan Transportation Update 2013 Byron Beerbower Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development 1

Agenda Starting points Issues –Continuing problems –Interaction with Michigan State Police (MSP) –Identifying solutions –Next steps 2

Starting Points 2006 survey identified these as problems: –Most problems found with smaller box trucks and ethnic food transportation –Mixed loads with multiple destinations were generally noted as not having adequate segregation 2013 these issues are still our problem areas. 3

Continuing Problems As identified during regular traffic stops and surveys by MSP, –refrigerated food trucks are not consistently using the refrigeration units. –Cross contamination is still an ongoing issue –Cost of fuel has is indicated as reason for not using refrigeration units –Language and knowledge of food safety 4

Interactions with MSP Expanded ride-alongs with FDD staff in both the Upper + Northern Lower Peninsula –Includes both Motor Carrier and Regular MSP staff in these areas MSP has asked for further training on the basics of food safety in these areas –Training has been completed in NLP this spring –To come in the UP 5

Identifying Solutions MDARD FDD staff have identified best practices and solutions such as: –Track locations and times waste sites are open –Developed a list of bonded flat bed/trailer haulers to hold abused food –Identified locations which will take abused food for a fee, into their dumpster 6

Identifying Solutions Train prosecutors on issues surrounding transportation of food, and prosecute –Identifying areas in Michigan Food Law that apply Working with Local Health Departments on tracking deliveries by trucks subsequently stopped and product seized by MDARD in a timely manner. –After hours contact information for LHDs 7

Next Steps Some legislators have discussed modeling a Michigan version of the Indiana law Continue to educate MSP in differing regions of the state Working with prosecutors to hold truckers and companies responsible 8
