 Examine the front and back covers.  Read the titles and any subtitles.  What will this be about or prove?  Look at the author’s name.

 Examine the illustrations/layout.  Examine the print (bold, italics, etc.)

 Examine the way the text is set up (book, short story, diary, dialogue, article, etc.).  As you examine and read these, write questions and make predictions and/or connections near each of these parts of the text.

Mark in the text:  Characters (who)  Setting (when & where)  Unfamiliar words/vocabulary ~~~~~~~  Important information ______

Write in the margins (work on adding variety):  Ask and answer questions (color 1)  Summarize (color 1)  Make predictions (color 2)  Formulate opinions; write reflections, reactions, and comments (color 2)  Make connections (color 3)  Analyze the author’s craft (color 3)  Look for patterns & repetition (color 4)  Label examples of themes/messages (color 4)

 Reread annotations – draw conclusions.  Reread introduction & conclusion – try to discover something new.  Examine patterns/repetitions – determine possible meanings or reasons for them.  Determine what the title might mean. Use the “Post- Reading” strategies to write a response in a separate notebook or page

 *Annotation analysis--You will be responsible for having colored pens or pencils. This will let you know what types you do a lot of and what types of annotations you should work on to add more depth.

 This semester, you will annotate a variety of texts in a variety of ways. Some will be short passages & other lengthy ones; some will be texts you may write on, while others may require the use of post-it notes. It is YOUR responsibility to have materials with you at all times.

 3-ring binder (1 inch)  Colored pens or pencils (minimum of 4 colors)  Post-it notes  Annotating Fiction Text “Bookmark” *Notebook/annotation grades may or may not be announced. Some assignments may or may not be “graded.” I may take up your notebooks at any time. You never know…
