Tri-Rig Facial Capture Nick Johns, Ashley Kaufman, Chris Suever

Problem Statement  The FBI Biometric Collection currently uses a system that collects facial profile pictures of participants from different angles for facial recognition research purposes. The participant must rotate 5 times from -90 degrees to +90 degrees in respect to a camera with their eyes open and closed for a total of 12 pictures.  Our system was designed for TwinsDay (a weekend convention held yearly to collect biometric data specifically for twins) to facilitate the ease and speed of the collection process by using three separate cameras. The participant rotates twice instead of 5 times. The process takes about half the time as the original system, and utilizes a user friendly GUI.

Goals and Objectives  Connect host computer to three (3) Raspberry Pis using SSH through network switch.  Retrieve Random ID Number  Implement Live-View  Capture Facial Images  Re-take Images  Settings  Save

Actual Accomplishments  We were able to incorporate all of our original goals into our system. This includes: SSH connection, ID retrieval, capture image, re-take images, settings, save, and live-view.  Live-view is faulty, but we still added it as a part of our project so it can be built upon in the future.

System Demo

Future Development  As previously stated, live-view can be built upon to ensure 100% accuracy with the system.  A unified tri-rig could be built that holds all three cameras on the same device to allow for a cleaner looking system. It would also allow for the cameras to be at equal height without having to measure them on separate tri-pods.

Business Potential  Because this system was built for research purposes, we haven’t looked into any business potential at this time.  Although the FBI owns the equipment used in this system’s design, we could redesign a system with new hardware using the software we developed if we ever decide to take our project further.
