Adobe Lightroom is a digital photograph management and editing software suite developed by Adobe Systems, designed to assist users in managing digital images and doing post production work. Lightroom combines photo management and editing in one interface.Adobe Systems Lightroom is a image management database that maintains information about images and edits to those images, allowing for nondestructive edits to those images. Lightroom Overview

Lightroom is not a replacement for Photoshop. Develop module is for basic photo editing work, and is nowhere near as powerful as Photoshop Lightroom Mobile Allows for editing images that are store in Lightroom via an iPad or iPhone It is very important to set up the proper folder/file structure before using Lightroom. Master folder that contains multiple folders of images. Photos\Person, Place, or Event Recommend placing the Catalog file on the local drive separate from image folder Allows for editing using smart previews if files are on a disconnected external drive Lightroom Overview Cont.

Lightroom’s 7 modules: Library – Organization, ranking, searching, viewing Develop – Non-destructive image editing Map – GPS marker of where the image was taken on a map Book – Photobook creation Slideshow – Photo presentation creation Print – Image Printing Web – Basic web photo gallery Lightroom Overview Cont.

Importing and Exporting of Images Importing using Lightroom’s import Synchronize folder File management Highly recommended that once a image is in Lightroom you do all image management in Lightroom Keywords Allows for searches on keywords such as “waterfalls”, “dog”, “sunset” etc. Image metadata Allows for update the metadata, adding a copyright and other data Lightroom Library Overview

Ranking Can rank by color, pick/reject, stars Can be useful for other purposes such as file edit status Searching Can search on keywords, metadata, folders etc. Collections Powerful tool for managing keepers Think of it as a photo album of related images Images in Collections can be edited with Lightroom Mobile on iPads and iPhones Only way of switching between image groupings in develop module Lightroom Library Overview Cont.

Used for editing images Edits in the Develop Module are applied globally to the image. Except for the following tools Spot Removal Red Eye Reduction Graduated Filter Radial Filter Adjustment Brush Lightroom Develop Overview

Edits are nondestructive to the image. Edits are not applied to the original file but instead keep in the catalog and applied in Lightroom History Allows for recovery when an Oops! is made Snapshots in time Lightroom Develop Overview Cont.

It is important to develop a workflow that works for you Sample Simple Workflow Import Files -> Rank -> Filter -> Edit -> Export -> Print Importing Files Copy files to hard drive then Adding files to Lightroom Allowing Lightroom to handle entire process (from copy to HD to importing to LR) To Convert to DNG Or Not ? DNG Adobe’s Open Source File Standard Smaller files No Sidecar file for processing info Lightroom Workflow Overview

Ranking Flags Flagged, Unflagged, Rejected Stars Color Codes Red, Yellow, Green, Blue, Purple Filter Based on ranking results Lightroom Workflow Overview Cont.

Develop Edits to White Balance, Exposure, Sharpening, Vignetting etc… Presets Plugins Photoshop OnOne HDR Editing Exporting Export to Hard Drive Publish to Facebook or other Internet Destination Lightroom Workflow Overview Cont.
