WORD OF THE WEEK GEOGRAPHY KEY STAGE 3

CLIMATE

The average weather conditions of an area over a long period of time. Northern Ireland’s climate varies from place to place and season to season.

PRECIPITATION

Water in any form which falls to the earth. It includes rain, hail, sleet or snow. Precipitation is recorded using a rain gauge.

WATERFALLS

A sudden fall of water over a steep slope. The tallest waterfall in the world is Angel Falls.

WORD OF THE WEEK GEOGRAPHY KEY STAGE 4

COASTAL EROSION

The wearing away and removal of land by the sea.

Newcastle, Co Down is experiencing intense coastal erosion.

Transnational corporations -large companies with offices and factories across the world. Nike is an example of a TNC

Transnational Corporations - TNC

Factories where people have to work long hours for very little money. Poor LEDC countries tend to operate sweatshops.

Volcanic Plug Slemish Mountain

A land form made from the hardened vent material from inside a volcano exposed after erosion. Slemish Mountain is an example of a volcanic plug. A flat, wide surface that is formed when lava comes out of the ground and spreads quickly.

Lava Plateau

Outside Belfast, from Cave Hill to Divis Mountain, is the visible edge of a lava plateau.

Aged dependency

The proportion of people aged 65 or over in a population. Northern Ireland has an increasing proportion of aged dependants in our community.

‘Green tourism’ – a sustainable form of tourism Ecotourism protects the environment and local way of life Ecotourism
