Alternative Input Devices Part B There will be a test on this information (both part a & b).

Communications (Digital) Wireless communication is the ability to send data or video without being connected to a wire, either by telephone or handheld computer. Communications connectivity refers to a program device’s ability to link with other programs and devices.

Digital Camcorder Produces video recordings with highly accurate color and crisp clear resolution The image can be saved as a data file. View recordings on a regular TV or copy them to VHS tape (Today can record directly to DVD-R or DVD-RW disk) Send MPEG video clips by way of to a mobile phone or PDA Immediate feedback from the LCD screen Stores still images or short video clips on flash memory card

Digital Camera Resembles a traditional camera Images are recorded and stored in digital form Captured pictures are stored on floppy disk, memory stick, smart media, or flash memory Immediate feedback using a LCD screen Images can be transferred into a word document, , or posted on a web site

Scanners Can read text printed on paper and transmit the information into a form the computer can use and edit. If you printed a paper that you had written for your English class and noticed that you made some mistakes, how would you correct your mistakes if you did not save your file? Flatbed scanners and handheld scanners. Barcode scanners read bar codes that allow tracking of assets and inventory, checking items in, maintaining physical inventory and controlling fixed assets in a business.

Magnetic Scanner Photo and Negative Scanner Negative Scanner Business Card Scanner

Smart Cards Contain electronic memory and embedded memory Stores cash in digital form Stores patients medical records Used for government identification Found in mobile phones and vending machines

Media Storage Hard disk, flash drive, CD-ROM Pen drive is another name for a USB flash drive. Access is the act of reading data from or writing to a storage device. Fire wire devices (Drives) are very fast external bus standards that support data transfer rates of up to 400 Mbps? A flash drive that is plugged into the USB port instantly gives an additional hard drive. ( floppy disk-old storage)

GPS GPS uses reference points to calculate positions accurate to a matter of meters. These points are called man-made stars. It is a worldwide radio-navigation system formed from a constellation of 24 satellites and ground stations. By using three satellites, it can calculate the longitude and latitude of the receiver based on where and how many spheres intersect. Satellite navigation system Help with driving directions Found in personal cars and emergency vehicles

Biometric Devices Authentication techniques for thumb prints, retina scan, and finger prints. (physical characteristics) Enhances security and privacy Widely used in business and industry Eliminates the need for passwords

Speech Recognition Speech recognition is the act of talking to a computer and the computer obeys the commands and translates the speech into written text. A microphone that is attached to a headset allows the input sound into a computer.

PDA – Handheld Computers A PDA is a portable computer small enough to be held in one’s hand. It can be used to beam messages, read a book, keep track of appointments, and maintain a contact list. Stylus or touch screen used to input data

Notebook Computer Notebook is another name for laptop The principal difference between a notebook computer and a personal computer is portability. Plasma, high contrast, and LCD displays are used in flat screen monitors and portable computers.

Tablet A tablet can be written on with a special- purpose pen or stylus and then translate handwriting into text. Selections can be made on a touch screen using a pen, stylus, or finger.

WACOM Tablet To use for a signature To draw and/or edit pictures

Web Cam/Cell Phone/Web TV The Web camera broadcasts images through the Internet. The cell phone also allows users to access the Internet by wireless communication. The Web TV is a small box with a keyboard that connects to a telephone line and television.
