PERSONAL NARRATIVE VS. FICTIONAL NARRATIVE

What should I know when I complete this presentation?  How are Personal Narratives and Fictional Narratives different?  How are Personal Narratives and Fictional Narratives the same?  What is unique about the themes/central ideas of a Fictional Narrative?  What is another name for a Fictional Narrative?  What is different about the point of view of a Personal Narrative vs. a Fictional Narrative?

PERSONAL NARRATIVE:  DYNAMIC TRUE STORY  CAN BE READ IN ONE SITTING  HAS A CENTRAL CHARACTER WHICH IS “I” (FIRST PERSON POINT OF VIEW)  CONTAINS VIVID DETAILS (IMAGERY)  USES DESCRIPTION, FIGURATIVE LANGUAGE, AN DIALOGUE TO TELL A PERSONAL STORY  CONTAINS CLEAR EVENTS (PLOT)  USUALLY HAS A SPECIFIC LESSON THE AUTHOR LEARNED  COMMUNICATES ONE PERSON’S OWN POINT OF VIEW—IT’S LIMITED

FICTIONAL NARRATIVE (SHORT STORY)  A DYNAMIC STORY THAT CAN BE READ IN ONE SITTING  VIVID USE OF DETAILS  REVEALS A TRUTH ABOUT LIFE (CENTRAL IDEA/THEME) THAT CAN APPLY TO EVERYONE  PLOT AND CHARACTERS INVENTED BY THE AUTHOR (MIGHT BE INSPIRED BY A REAL-LIFE EVENT)  THE AUTHOR CAN USE MULTIPLE PERSPECTIVES (1 ST, 3 RD, OR 2 ND PERSON POINT OF VIEW )

FICTIONAL NARRATIVE (SHORT STORY)  COUNTLESS TOPICS, CONFLICTS, CHARACTERS, AND SETTINGS  THE THEME/CENTRAL IDEA IS FOUND WITHIN THE STORY AND MIGHT NOT BE CLEARLY STATED  EACH PERSON MIGHT DISCOVER A DIFFERENT CENTRAL IDEA OR THEME WHEN READING A SHORT STORY/FICTIONAL NARRATIVE. COULD CONTAIN MULTIPLE THEMES/CENTRAL IDEAS. (UNIVERSAL THEMES AND CENTRAL IDEAS)  MORE CREATIVE BECAUSE THE AUTHOR IS NOT LIMITED TO JUST ONE EXPERIENCE AND ONE PERSON’S EXPERIENCE.

What did you learn? ON YOUR OWN PAPER AND WITH A PARTNER, COMPLETE A VENN DIAGRAM SHOWING THE SIMILARITIES AND DIFFERENCES BETWEEN A PERSONAL NARRATIVE AND A FICTIONAL NARRATIVE. HINT: You might go back to the 2 nd slide. Can you answer the questions?
