Short Story Notes Narrative Poem: A poem that tells a story. Mood: The primary feeling that the reader experiences while reading a piece of literature. Poe is famous for creating one mood in a story and emphasizing it throughout. This is called a single effect.

Foreshadow - To present an indication or a suggestion of beforehand Suspense: The reader’s feeling of curiosity, uncertainty, or even anxiety about the outcome of events in a story. Writers create suspense by putting characters in tense or risky situations

Climax: A narrative’s biggest moment Climax: A narrative’s biggest moment. During the climax the action of the story is at its peak and the feelings of the reader’s are at their most intense. Anti-Climax: The point at which the reader discovers the story has not turned out the way they expected (Casey at the Bat).

Conflict: The struggle between opposing forces. Internal Conflict: It occurs within a character that experiences opposing ideas or feelings. It is also called: Man Vs. Self.

External Conflict: It occurs between characters or between a character and a force of nature. It is also called: Man Vs. Man or Man Vs. Nature.
