Starter Write down all the different ways you can think of to connect to the internet.

Today’s Learning Objectives Understand ways in which mobile broadband can benefit a business Understand the different ways of working collaboratively online Understand the ways in which software can be purchased and access provided to users

Task 1 Understand ways in which mobile broadband can benefit a business

Mobile Broadband

Mobile Broadband Terms Dongle –Small piece of USB hardware that picks up Bluetooth and 3G Signals 3G –Allows high speed wireless data transfer Bluetooth –Allows the exchange of data over short distances

Mobile Broadband – Advantages & Disadvantages Can access the internet from anywhere Does not rely on Wi-Fi connections No landline needed All data encrypted using 3G unlike Wi-Fi Dongle doesn’t use power unlike home router × 3G signal might be weak or not available in all areas × More expensive ×Probably pay more if download/upload limit reached × Access abroad is very expensive ( roaming charges) × Dongle could be lost or stolen × Access all the time can result in working 24/7 - stress

Mobile broadband or not? A retired couple who live in the country A business man who commutes to work everyday by train A teenager who likes playing online games A family living in a built up city A business woman who travels to other countries regularly as part of her job A family on holiday on a remote island Students living in temporary accommodation A woman selling handmade greetings cards from home

Task 2 Understand the different ways of working collaboratively online

Match Definitions COLLABORATIVE WIKI REMOTELY TELEWORKING ONLINE FORUM MULTI-TASK

Working Collaboratively The internet allows people to work together no matter where they are based What are the advantages of this? –Can work simultaneously on the same project –Get work done in less time –Share ideas and be more creative –Produce better products for their customers –Help each other if they need it

Ways of using the Internet to work together –Video Conferencing –VoIP –WiKis & Online Forums –Teleworking –

Latency and Jitter Latency Delay between the chunks (packets) of data as it travels from the start point to the destination. The delay between packets is constant. Results in an overall delay from start to end of message which is noticeable to the human ear. Jitter Variation in the delay between packets. Results in a stuttering effect in the voice call.

Wikis and Online Forums Wikis -organising ideas of a group -working together on a project -getting feedback on products Forums –Keep in touch with others in their industry/field –Keep up to date with developments –Get help from others with similar interests

‘The Cloud’

Teleworking Advantages Employees can work from home Business does not have to pay for office space Less time spent travelling to work Flexible hours Disadvantages Difficult to separate work and social life Distracting Less sociable

Task 3 Software Types  Generic Software – ‘off the shelf’  Specialist Software – ‘customised’ ‘bespoke’

Software Licences -Multi-user ( fixed number of computers ) -Licence by use ( concurrent users ) -Site ( all computers on a site)

Buying and Upgrading Software Locally installed -buy CD / download -One off charge -Use as long as you like Leasing -Pay monthly -Software and data saved on own computer Software as a Service (SaaS) -‘pay as you go’ -Software and data hosted by a provider in ‘the cloud’

Today’s Learning Objectives Understand ways in which mobile broadband can benefit a business Understand the different ways of working collaboratively online Understand the ways in which software can be purchased and access provided to users
