CEO Lesson #8 Networking and Relationship Building

 Have a very specific subject line – lay out exactly what you are seeking to do  Make sure you compliment the person and acknowledge something specific they have done  Shows that you have done your research and aren’t just blasting out s to random people  Show that you have credibility  Very fine line here – need to tell enough about yourself so that they will want to meet you  But, want to save something for them to find out later  Be mindful of the other person’s time and close with an “ask”  Ask for a quick phone call or meeting – and end by saying you understand if they are too busy  Meeting in person is far more effective – shows that you genuinely care and are willing to make an effort  Generally should be able to read note in less than 1 minute  Hard copy letter can be incredibly effective 7 The Cold / Letter Always try and put yourself in the other person’s shoes. Make it as easy as possible for them to connect with you and share their thoughts.

 The first meeting is easy – staying in touch and building a relationship is incredibly difficult  TAKE NOTES – VERY IMPORTANT  If it’s a 1 on 1, it might be awkward to take notes, but write everything down immediately after the meeting  Develop an organized system to keep track of all contacts, meeting notes, s, etc.  Must talk to people 3, 4, even 5 times before a true relationship is formed  1 true relationship is more valuable than 10 people you have spoken with once 8  Always prepare a list of questions before the first meeting  But do not walk in with a list of questions and just go one by one – should be conversational – VERY IMPORTANT  Try to identify what this person is truly passionate about  Try to find common interests or backgrounds  Use the principles of Dale Carnegie that I talked about in Lesson #1 to try and drive the conversation  Pretend that the person is an old friend that you are catching up with – act like you’re already friends How to Prepare for the First Meeting and What to Look for Staying in Touch and Building the Relationship The First Meeting and Staying in Touch
