Goals and Objectives Guidance for Tech Plans

“The ends justify the means” Before beginning you must know where you are headed. Goals give you direction. Goals are global and not too specific. Ask yourself, “where do I see us in 3-5 years?” in each area.

Think as a contractor…. Your job is to build a building In order for your building to be stable you need to start with a foundation.

Your building foundation is your goal It is what holds your plan together It is the outline and the basis It is not too specific but more of a blanket statement.

Goal Example: Students will become proficient in math and language arts California Content Standards. Students will become educated on the safest practices for using the internet and becoming safety-conscious internet citizens.

Measurable, defined, operational, simple steps, and specific. Objectives contribute to the fulfillment of goals. Objectives defined:

Think as a contractor again… Your foundation is poured Now how will you make it sturdy? You will frame the structure of the building.

Your Objectives are your frame. They can not stand without the foundation They give stability to the foundation They set the structure for the building.

Objectives Think specific Think measurable Think of who you are targeting: students, staff, administration, parents What will they do? By when? How will you measure it?

Objective sentence frame: Objectives: _________ will be ____% proficient on _____________by ______ as measured by ___________

First section of Objective Who are you targeting? Pleasant Valley students will Indianola certificated staff will Roosevelt parents will

Second section of objective What will they do? Make sure it supports your goal. Think measurable Students will be 75% proficient in internet safety

Third section of an objective: By when? Think towards the end of the tech plan. Students will be 75% proficient in internet safety by June 2012,

Final section of objective How will you measure growth? Make sure that you use concrete measures like: EdTech profile, CST, Benchmarks, parent surveys, unit tests etc. Do not use things such as: anecdotal notes, observations, sign in sheets, etc. If it is not measurable it will be sent back for revisions.

Final section of objective Students will be 75% proficient in internet safety by June 2012, as measured by the cyber safety curriculum student survey.

Benchmarks defined Measures of progress toward a goal, taken at intervals prior to the program’s completion or the anticipated attainment of the final goal.

Back to our building…. Think of the building inspector. His job is to come out to the building site at specific points to make sure your progressing towards your goal. The inspectors report will tell you that you are fine or to fix things before you move on.

Benchmarks Use the same frame as the Objectives: _________ will be ____% proficient on _____________by ______ as measured by ___________ break it down into manageable chunks. break it down into manageable chunks.

Benchmarks They are the inspectors that make sure we are making steady progress towards our objectives and goals. You may use the same sentence frame as in your objective.

Year 1 Benchmark Students will be 50% proficient on internet safety by June 2010, as measured by the cyber safety student survey.

Year 2 Benchmark Students will be 60% proficient on internet safety by June 2011, as measured by the cyber safety student survey.

Year 3 Benchmark Students will be 75% proficient on internet safety by June 2012, as measured by the Cyber Safety student survey.

Activities and our building analogy… Activities would be all the materials and work that go into completing the structure.

Activities All activities need to support your objective and goals. Remember to have activities that reflect student learning not just teachers teaching. Ex. Teachers will teach 12 lessons on cyber safety. Change it to: All K-12 students will be taught a minimum of 12 lessons on internet safety per year using the Cyber Safety curriculum. Keep it student centered.
