Social Studies Elective Day Welcome future Juniors Class of 2013

Junior Social Studies Requirements 40 weeks of the NYS Regents course United States History & Government At Kenmore West there are three different options to meet this requirement: 1.Regents U.S. History Course 2.Honors U.S. History Course 3.A.P. U.S. History Course/IB

Course Requirements: 1 Credit Course NYS required Regents examination in June that covers content from just 11 th grade Exam is the same format as 10 th grade Global Studies Exam: 50 Multiple Choice Questions 1 Thematic Essay 1 Document Based Essay

Honors U.S. History Prerequisites: A Final average of at least a 90% in Global History and Geography 10; consistent attendance, and high level reading comprehension, analytical thinking ability; teacher recommendation, and the completion of a summer reading program are mandatory. The student MUST PASS, with a 65%, the summer reading test.

Honors U.S. History Coursework: Analysis & creation of primary documents and political cartoons News – Branches Project Recreation of the Constitutional Convention Role Playing Activities Constant affirmation of themes in United States History

A.P. United States History Prerequisites: 90% ave. in Global Studies OR teacher recommendation Summer assignment? Yes, you are required to read the first 3 chapters of the text and answer questions related to the reading. (Doing this gives us a jumpstart on a course that must be completed by first Friday of May.)

Reasons to take A.P. U.S. History You will be challenged. You will develop very important skills that will help you be successful in college. You will learn a lot. You can earn college credit (last year 97% of the 60 students who took the exam got a 3 or above). This is not an elective. All students must take and pass United States History, this course is simply a more advanced version of Regents U.S. History.

A.P. U.S. History Possible Teacher: Mr. Welgoss Future Applications: 1)You can earn 3 college credits. 2)Increases your chances of getting into the college of your choice. 3)Decreases your chances of being struck by lightning* * This last claim has not been backed with statistical data.

Future Possibilities in Social Studies You must successfully complete four years of Social Studies and pass the 2 NYS Regents examinations. However there are many electives and Advanced Placement courses you can take to further enrich your education here at Kenmore West!!
