Completing some service learning will help you stand out from other job and/or college applicants.

Alternative Class Choices/Prerequisites If there are not enough students enrolled, classes may not be offered. Be sure to pick alternative classes, numbering them “1” for your first choice, “2” for your 2 nd, etc. Check for prerequisites. You need to have passed the prerequisite course with a “D” or better before you can sign up for the advanced course.

How many credits do I sign up for? 6 credits 6 credits: 1 study hall each semester. 6.5 credits 6.5 credits: 1 study hall either semester. 7 creditsno 7 credits: no study halls. 6 credits GBAPS states that “a student must carry at least 6 credits a year”.

Why include study hall(s) in your schedule Can get help from teachers or resources if needed. More time for after-school activities. Busy people schedule time to get things done. Less stress! Good practice for what’s to come.

Alternative Class Times for Zero hour at 6:30 AM ( 1 course offering): 1. Chemistry

Retaking a Course If you earned a “D” or “F” in a class, courses can be retaken. New grade will replace old one if higher. NOTE: You cannot earn credit for the same course twice (exception is math).

College Admission Requirements Subject 4 Eng. Lang Arts 3/4 Mathematics 3/4 Science (lab) 3/4 Social Studies 4 College Prep Electives Foreign/World Language, fine arts, computer science and other academic areas What do they look for:Rigor Co-Curricular involvement Leadership Quality Quality more than quantity Community Service Requirements vary. You MUST check with the college of your choice. These requirements are for the minimum that a college will accept, most colleges want you to have more than the minimum.

Concurrent Enrollment Program Courses (CEP) Can take college-level courses and earn graded college/university credits while at high school. Grades go on an official college transcript. March 1st Deadline to submit paperwork will be March 1st. Can change mind about taking it for college credit 10 days into the class. Need to complete: Application with personal statement of interest. Two recommendation forms – one from an English and the 2 nd from another teacher. Tuition is charged for St. Norbert’s and UWGB classes. NWTC CEP courses do not require tuition. See course description book for more information.

Advanced Placement Courses and Examinations Can earn college credit by taking test from the Educational Testing Service. Tests given middle of May – The fee for each exam is $87 5 is highest score; 1 is lowest – If you earn a 3, 4, or 5, most WI public universities will accept. Results sent to students and PHS in July. Classes require a lot of work! Need current teacher initials on course selection sheet for any advanced and/or A.P. classes.

Traveling to Other High Schools Students may sign up for classes that are offered at other schools such as Acting or Sign Language. Transportation is your responsibility. Must complete a shared student form. Travel during a study hall and/or lunch. No guarantees the class will fit into your schedule.

English Language Arts 4 Credits All students are required to take English Language Arts 9, 10 and 11 Advanced Language Arts 9, 10, 11 require a teacher initials on course selection sheet and require summer work

Social Studies Courses: 9 th – 11 th Grade 3 credits From your current Social Studies 9 th class, you can…. ↓↓↓↓↓↓ ___Social Studies 10 _ AP Recommended (10 th ) ____AP Recommended ( 10 th ) ↓↓ ↓↓ ↓↓ Social Studies 11 AP World History AP US History (if taken 10 th grade) (preferred option) Social Studies 11th or AP US History Talk to your social studies teacher for their recommendation.

MATH – 3 credits Speak to current math teacher and get initial by their recommendation. Taking Algebra I in Grade 8 counts for 1 elective credit, not math. Gr. 8 Geometry does count for HS math credit. Most colleges want to see 4 years of high school math, even though only 3 are required for graduation from high school

SCIENCE – 2 credits Only need Physical Science and Biology for graduation from high school, BUT colleges want to see at least 3 to 4 years of lab science, so Chemistry or Conceptual Chemistry are highly recommended. If students took Biology in Gr. 9, MUST take Chemistry in Gr. 10 and Physics or AP Physics. Or students can take Physical Science.

Personal and Financial Literacy (PFL) 0.5 credit If students opt to test out of this class, the test out must be taken in sophomore or junior year. only The test-out option is only offered November of each year. Students must score 70% or better to earn a “P” and not have to take the class. Credit is not given. Students can try testing out more than once.

World Language UW-Madison UW-Madison requires two CONSECUTIVE years but usually four is the average. UW-Eau Claire UW-Eau Claire requires 2 years. Taking two years keeps options open for after high school! The GBAPS will be offering a second year of Italian and Chinese (New to Preble).

Physical Education 1.5 credits over 3 years Students MUST take PE 9 before Personal Fitness and Personal Fitness before Strength Training. If students take a year of PE, the 2 nd class will count for elective credit (unless making up a failed class). Students can take the same class over twice (except PE 9). PE classes can be taken for Pass/Fail instead of a letter grade (will not be calculated into GPA). This must be chosen before the class starts. Be sure to list alternative choices!

Summer Physical Education If students plan to take summer PE, still sign up for a PE class but indicate a summer PE class will be taken on the course selection sheet. Upon completion of the summer PE class, your counselor will schedule a study hall OR a class in place of the PE class. If students want another class instead of a study hall in place of the summer PE, please be sure to indicate that choice on the course selection sheet.

Summer School Course information and registration materials will arrive in late March or early April. Listen for announcements Some courses fill QUICKLY! Register early.

Students with IEPs IEP teachers will select the core classes and sign the course registration sheet. Students will need to decide which electives to enroll in.

Course Fees Some courses require additional fees for materials and supplies. Consult the course description book for more information.

On-Line Scheduling in the computer labs Room 158 & 159 Students will need scheduling sheet information for on-line registration in the computer lab. Parent signature required on back of the sheet. Teacher initials required for math, world language, and advanced and AP classes you are taking. Students’ transcript received today has student ID #, state ID number, graduation requirements, and work in progress listed. Tuesday, Dec. 14 th (Baudhuin & Laraby) Wednesday, Dec. 15 th (Villiesse, Guerndt, & Mellberg) Thursday, Dec. 16 th (Bristol, Heimerman, & VanRemortel) Friday, Jan. 14 th (Demerath, Pierquet, Johnson, & Jacobs)

Course numbers will be extremely important when you are scheduling Pay close attention to the course number: A number ending in “1” means the class will be 1 st semester; a “2” means second semester. A number ending in 3 means it is a full-year course. A number ending in “4” means that it is a semester-long course that will be offered EITHER first or second semester. A number beginning with UTL means that it is a team-taught, regular education course.

Be sure to visit the GBAPS or Preble website and review the Course Selection Book! We’ll only have a few minutes to discuss your choices during the actual scheduling process. Schedule a time to meet with your counselor if you have questions. Follow the outline on the ½ sheet of paper give to you by your counselor before this presentation started to make sure that you have everything you need for registration.
