Group 4 (Science) Information Session Internal Assessment & Predicted Grades

Standard Level vs. High Level Exam Weight SL – Paper 1 (20%) 32% – Paper 2 (32%) 24% – Paper 3 (24%) Total = 76% HL – Paper 1 (20%) 36% – Paper 2 (36%) 20% – Paper 3 (20%) Total = 76%

Percentages converted to the IB scale Each exam (paper 1, 2 and 3) has individual IB boundaries which dictate a number from 1 to 7 This is a good way to estimate how a student is performing on a consistent bases (BSP = Best Sustained Performance) overall 1 to 7 boundary Although, in the end it is the percentage from each paper by its respective weight that is used to determine the IB number from the overall 1 to 7 boundary, for example: – Paper 1 mark (25/40 = 62.5%) – x 20 (weight of paper 1) = 12.5 – Therefore this paper 1 mark is contributing 12.5 out of a potential 20 to an overall percentage out of 100

Internal Assessment (IA) (24%) two Teachers take your best two D, DCP, and CE moderated labs plus PS (Personal Skills from group 4 project) and MS (Manipulative Skills from overall practical work) marks to tabulate your overall Internal Assessment mark 6 labs worth 6 marks each plus 6 marks each for MS and PS totals 48 marks Each lab mark is worth 0.5% of your final percentage contributing to a total of 24% Each lab mark is worth 0.5% of your final percentage contributing to a total of 24% notzero! For every lab that is not handed in you will receive a mark of zero! How does this affect your overall IB grade?

Scenario 1 Comparison between two students with different lab marks but the same exam marks They result in different overall IB grades

Scenario 2 Comparison between two students with the same paper 1 IB grade (3), same lab mark, but different overall IB grades This shows the gap between IB grades for an individual paper, for instance, the HL chemistry spread for a 3 is between 45  64% which is a difference of 19%

Scenario 3 No Labs = Grade drops by at least 18% from overall percentage assuming the student achieves perfect marks for MS and PS

All Labs Are Due March 14 th We will predict your grade to the best of our ability but inevitably you determine your grade in the end Learn from your mistakes on the mocks and do the best you can on the May exams! Good luck! Thank you! – The Science Department
